GREENSBORO, N.C. – Junior Casey Cumiskey (Milltown, N.J.) of the Southern New Hampshire University baseball team received American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) East All-Region First Team honors, as one of six total Penmen earning the accolades that were announced Wednesday.
Graduate students Jake Pisano (Hamden, Conn.) and Shane McNamara (Londonderry, N.H.), junior Joel Valera (Boston, Mass.), freshman Zak Whitney (Keene, N.H.) and junior Jack Davis (LaGrangeville, N.Y.) all earned spots on the Second Team, giving the Penmen six honorees, which matched Bentley University, Molloy University and Wilmington (Del.) University for best in the region.
Cumiskey, who has also collected Division 2 Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) East All-Region First Team, National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) East All-Region First Team, NE10 All-Conference First Team and NE10 All-Defensive Team honors at shortstop, finished the year batting .362 (71-196) with 20 home runs, 69 RBI, 64 runs scored and 16 stolen bases, while slashing .445/.745/1.190. Cumiskey made 13 errors in 243 chances at short for a .947 fielding percentage. The two-time NE10 Player of the Week (March 9, April 6) ranked second in the East Region in home runs, fourth in RBI and slugging percentage, 1th in runs, 16th in hits and doubles. Cumiskey's 20 long-balls set a new single-season record for the Penmen, while the 69 RBI were third and the 64 runs were 10th.
Pisano, who was a D2CCA East All-Region First Team, NCBWA East All-Region Second Team and NE10 All-Conference First Team selection, hit .397 (83-209) with five home runs, 76 RBI, 66 runs scored and 13 stolen bases, while getting on base at a .496 clip and slugging .598 for a 1.094 OPS. Pisano ranked third in the East Region in hits, RBI and doubles, fifth in runs, seventh in batting, triples and hit by pitches, and eighth in on-base percentage. Pisano finished the season first in RBI in the program's single-season record book, second in hits and hit by pitches, third in doubles, fourth in batting average, and seventh in runs scored.
McNamara, who was a D2CCA East All-Region Second Team, NCBWA East All-Region Second Team and NE10 First Team pick, slashed .349/.443/.697/1.140, as he went 53-for-152 on the season with 13 home runs, 58 RBI, 53 runs scored and nine steals. McNamara, who was named the NE10 Player of the Week on April 13 and then chosen as the NCBWA National Hitter of the Week three days later, ranked seventh in the region in home runs and 11th in RBI. He was one of seven players in the NE10 with a 1.000 fielding percentage, as he handled all 72 of his chances in center. McNamara, who missed the final 11 games of the season with an injury, placed 10th in the SNHU single-season record book in home runs.
Valera wrapped up at .298 (51-171) with 10 homers, 45 RBI and 34 runs scored, while producing a slash line of .362/.550/.912. He made seven errors in 121 chances at the hot corner for a .942 fielding mark. The April 20 NE10 Player of the Week was 20th in the region in home runs. He was also a D2CCA East All-Region First Team, NCBWA East All-Region Second Team, NE10 First Team and NE10 All-Defensive Team recipient.
Whitney, who was also chosen as the NE10 Rookie Pitcher of the Year, in addition to receiving NE10 All-Conference First Team and NE10 All-Rookie Team honors, made 15 appearances this season, including 13 starts. Whitney went 7-2 with a 3.89 ERA, striking out 95 and walking 30 over 81 innings. The May 4 NE10 Pitcher of the Week and three-time NE10 Rookie of the Week (March 9, March 16, May 4) ranked third in the East Region in strikeouts, sixth in complete games (3), seventh in wins, ninth in both strikeouts per nine innings (10.56) and strikeout-to-walk ratio (3.17), and 15th in ERA.
Davis was also a D2CCA East All-Region Second Team, NCBWA East All-Region First Team and NE10 First Team choice. In 25 appearances – all out of the bullpen – Davis went 9-3 with a 2.15 ERA, striking out 64 and walking 32 over 62-and-two-thirds innings, while limiting opponents to a .234 batting average. The April 6 NE10 Pitcher of the Week led the region in appearances, while ranking second ERA, fourth in wins, ninth in hits allowed per nne (7.76), 13th in WHIP, 16th in strikeouts per nine (9.19) and 19th in strikeouts. In the SNHU single-season record book, Davis finished tied for first in appearances and fifth in victories.
The Penmen finished 41-14, including 30-6 in the NE10 to win the regular-season title and claim the top seed, before falling in the NE10 finals. SNHU then earned its 13th NCAA tournament berth, receiving the East Region's No. 3 seed, but went 1-2 in the East Regional II pod to fall a game short of the final.
