Women's Basketball Takes Down New Haven 64-58 Behind Gordon's 17

Junior Meghan Gordon (Attleboro, Mass.) pumped in 17 points as Southern New Hampshire Women's Basketball snapped a four-game skid with a 64-58 win over visiting New Haven Tuesday night at the Stan Spirou Field House.

  • Graduate student Stephanie Davis (Windham, N.H.) - 8 points (1-4 FG, 6-6 FT), 6 rebounds, 8 assists, 2 steals
  • Sophomore Abby Wager (Mansfield, Mass.) – 8 points (2-8 FG, 1-4 3-FG, 3-4 FT), 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals
KEY MOMENTS   
  • SNHU opened an early 8-2 lead with Hughes hitting a pair of buckets in the early action.
  • The teams played even through the rest of the quarter with the Penmen up 16-11 after one.
  • A three-point field goal with 3:17 to play in the half by Charlotte Basset gave New Haven it's first lead, and Bassett would connect on two more field goals as the Charger lead grew to 30-24 at halftime.
  • It took SNHU less than three minutes of the third quarter to draw even at 33-33 on a pair of free throws by senior Sydnie DeVries (Monson, Mass.)
  • The Penmen would take the lead at 43-42 on a pair of free throws by freshman Samantha Pfeil (Methuen, Mass.) with 1:21 to play in the third and would not give the lead up for the rest of the contest.
  • Key free throw shooting - SNHU went 10-of-12 in the fourth quarter and 22-of-24 (91.7%) for the game - helped the Penmen earn the win.

  • Freshman Kameron St. Pierre (Swansea, Mass.) - 3 points (1-2 FG, 1-2 3-FG, 1 rebound
  • Junior Matilde Baron (Vicenza, Italy) registered two points (2-2 FT), 1 rebound
  • Freshman Taylor Brennan (Southbury, Conn.) pulled down two rebounds, added two assists and had one steal
  • The Penmen shot 18-43 (41.9%) including 6-19 (31.6%) from three and hitting 22-24 free throws.  New Haven went 23-58 (39.7%), hit 7-26 from downtown, and converted 5-9 free throws.
  • Each team had 31 rebounds and 20 turnovers. 
  • There were five lead changes and the game was tied three times.
NOTES
  • The 22 made free throws were one shy of the season-high 23 recorded against Post University on November 8, although that was on 37 attempts.
  • New Haven leads the all-time series with the Penmen 38-27, although SNHU has won five of the last six meetings.  New Haven won the first meeting this year 69-60.
  • SNHU improves to 69-35 (.663) since the 2021-22 season started.
WHAT'S NEXT
  • The Penmen will play at Pace University on Saturday.  The next home game will be on Saturday, February 8 (1:30 p.m.) against Southern Connecticut State University.  It will be Pink Day in the Stan Spirou Field House.
