Casey Cumiskey (Milltown, N.J.) of the Southern New Hampshire University baseball team was selected as the NE10 Player of the Week and freshman
Zak Whitney (Keene, N.H.) was chosen as the NE10 Rookie of the Week, both for the period ending March 8, the league office announced Monday.
Cumiskey hit .563 (9-16) with two home runs, seven RBI and three runs scored during a 3-1 week for SNHU. Cumiskey slashed .588/1.000/1.588, as he drew a walk and had three extra-base hits. The shortstop went 8-for-9 with two home runs, six RBI and three runs scored in Saturday's doubleheader with Jefferson University.
Whitney fired seven scoreless frames, allowing just three hits, while punching out 14 without issuing a walk, in a 15-0 victory over Jefferson in game one of Saturday's twinbill.
Cumiskey has started all 10 games he has played in his first season with the Penmen, batting .341 (14-41) with three home runs, 10 RBI and nine runs scored, while slashing .426/.610/1.036. He is tied for third in the league in stolen bases (4) and fourth in home runs.
Whitney has taken three turns in the rotation and is 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA, striking out 23 and walking seven over 14 innings. He is tied for second in the conference in strikeouts.
Cumiskey, Whitney and the Penmen (8-4) are back in action Saturday, March 14 when they open NE10 play with a noon doubleheader at Southern Connecticut State University.
