NO. ATTLEBORO, Mass. – Freshman
Zak Whitney (Keene, N.H.) of the Southern New Hampshire University baseball team was selected as both the NE10 Pitcher and Rookie of the Week for the period ending May 3, the league office announced Monday.
Whitney, who was previously recognized as the NE10 Rookie of the Week on March 9 and March 16, but claims his first Pitcher of the Week accolade, turned in a stellar performance in SNHU's 3-2, extra-inning victory at Pace University in Friday's nightcap. Despite receiving a no-decision, Whitney fired seven strong innings, allowing two runs on four hits, while striking out 11 and walking only two.
In 12 appearances this season, including 11 starts, Whitney is 6-1 with a 3.59 ERA, striking out 87 and walking 20 over 67-and-two-thirds innings. He is tied for the NE10 lead in strikeouts, while ranking third in innings pitched, sixth in both wins and ERA, and ninth in opposing batting average (.268).
Whitney and the Penmen (38-10, 30-6 NE10) won the NE10 Regular-Season Championship and claimed the top seed for the NE10 Championship, which they will host at Penmen Field on May 7-9. They open NE10 Championship Weekend on Thursday (12 p.m.) against either fourth-seeded Adelphi University of fifth-seeded Saint Michael's College.
