Castro Claims NE10 Defensive Player of the Week Honors

Junior collected five points and contributed to the clean sheet in 6-0 win Saturday

NO. ATTLEBORO, Mass. – Junior Gabriel Castro (León, Spain) of the fifth-ranked Southern New Hampshire University men's soccer team was chosen as the NE10 Defensive Player of the Week for the period ending Sept. 13, the league office announced Monday.

Castro tallied a pair of goals and an assist, while anchoring a defense that posted a clean sheet against a team receiving votes in the national poll, as SNHU blanked Wilmington (Del.) University, 6-0 Saturday. Both of Castro's goals were free-kick beauties, as he had a hand in three of the first four Penmen goals over the initial 24:57 of the contest. His defensive effort helped limit the Wildcats to just four shots on goal.

Castro ranks third on the team in points through five matches, as he has two goals and two assists for six points.

Castro and the Penmen (4-0-1) return to action Wednesday, Sept. 16 (6 p.m.) when they take on the University of Bridgeport.
