MANCHESTER, N.H. - Michael Adam's (Ludlow, MA) goal with
4:12 remaining lifted fifth-ranked Southern New Hampshire
University to a 2-1 Northeast-10 men's soccer victory over Franklin
Pierce University at Larkin Field Tuesday night. For the
Penmen, it extended their unbeaten streak to 12 games (10-0-2) as
they improved to 12-1-2 overall and 8-0-2 in NE-10 play. The
Ravens, the defending NCAA Division II national champions, are now
8-6-1 and 6-2-1 in the league.
The win marks the first for SNHU
over its intrastate rival since 2005. The Penmen have now
recorded their most victories since the 2002 campaign in which it
went 20-3-2 and reached the Division II championship game.
Adam registered the game-winner on
an unassisted tally with just over four minutes remaining in
regulation. He collected a ball from 25 yards out that
glanced off a Raven defender and delivered a floating shot that
snuck inside the near right post past FPU keeper Vinny
Papageorgiou.
Southern New Hampshire took a 1-0
lead just over 13 minutes into the game when Paulson
Edum (Calabar, Nigeria) scored. Jayme
Kapinos (Ludlow, MA) delivered a long pass into the top of
the box to Edum, who put the ball away with a swirling bicycle kick
that found the back of the net. Gabe Mercier
(Middleboro, MA) also assisted on the goal.
Franklin Pierce tied the game at
the 36:01 mark. Casey Ftorek made a move past a Penmen
defender in the area and was in alone on SNHU keeper Sean
Lambert (Rehoboth, MA) who he would beat with a shot to
Lambert's left. Frantz Francois assisted on the tally.
It marked the first goal SNHU had surrendered at home all season in
nine games and just the fourth allowed by the Penmen all season.
Lambert made four saves for
Southern New Hampshire to earn the victory while Papageorgiou made
three stops for the Ravens. Franklin Pierce held a 12-10
advantage in shots on the evening.
SNHU returns to action on Saturday
when it travels to No. 17 Merrimack for a 1:00 contest.
