NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. - Paulson Edum (Calabar, Nigeria)
scored a pair of goals to lead No. 5 Southern New Hampshire
University to a 2-1 Northeast-10 men's soccer victory over No. 17
Merrimack College at Warrior Field Saturday afternoon. The
Penmen, who also entered the game ranked first in the adidas/NSCAA
East region poll, are now 13-1-2 overall and 9-0-2 in NE-10
play. The Warriors, who entered the game ranked second in the
region, are now 9-3-2 and 6-3-1 in the league.
SNHU's win was its fourth in a row
and also extended its unbeaten streak to 13 games (11-0-2) dating
back to a 1-0 loss to Wilmington University on September 3.
It marks SNHU's longest unbeaten streak since a 16-game string in
2002 (15-0-1). The win also clinched a first-round home game
in the upcoming Northeast-10 Tournament for the Penmen, as they can
finish no lower than third in the league standings.
Edum got the Penmen on the board at
the game's 12:07 mark when he headed home a crossing pass from
Ransford Shand (Brooklyn, NY). Just over 12
minutes later Edum would strike again when he took a pass from
Kevin Woods (Alyth, Scotland) and fired it into
the top right corner of the goal. SNHU would hold a 2-0 lead
into halftime. Merrimack would halve SNHU's lead with just
over 13 minutes left when Tiago Dalboni scored following a scramble
in front of the Penmen goal.
Sean Lambert
(Rehoboth, MA) made four saves for Southern New Hampshire in a
complete-game effort in goal. Merrimack keeper Rob Pedra
turned aside two shots. The Warriors held a 14-9 shot
advantage on the afternoon, including a 10-2 edge in the second
half.
Southern New Hampshire returns to
action on Wednesday afternoon when it travels to Saint Anselm
College for a 3:00 contest.
