SMITHFIELD, R.I. -
The College of Saint Rose baseball team swept Southern New
Hampshire University in a Northeast-10 doubleheader by scores of
4-0 and 4-1 at Bryant University Saturday. The games were
scheduled to be played at SNHU but moved to Bryant due to
unplayable field conditions in Manchester. The Golden Knights
improve to 5-13 and 3-0 in NE-10 play while the Penmen are 2-8 and
0-2 in the league.
In game one, Saint Rose broke open
a scoreless game with two runs in the top of the seventh inning and
scored two more times in the top of the ninth. Grant Smith
hit a two run single in the seventh, while Jake Perez was 3-4 with
two runs scored. Brett Weber and Casey Deuel each had two
hits for the Golden Knights, while Ryan Thompson
(Westford, MA) had two of SNHU's four hits in the opener.
Nick DeMidio went the distance to
pick up the win, giving up four hits while striking out six and
walking one. Ryan Quinn (Lebanon, CT) went 8
2/3 for SNHU, scattering 10 hits and fanning five.
In game two, Saint Rose took a 1-0
lead in the first when Ryan Price hit a one-out double and later
scored on an error. The Golden Knights made it 2-0 in the
third Derek Marshall singled to score Deuel, who led off the inning
by being hit. The Penmen got a run back in the bottom of the
fifth when Jeff Giannino's (Beverly, MA)
broken-bat single scored Eric Pelletier (Beverly,
MA). The Penmen would load the bases in the bottom of the
sixth and eighth innings but came away empty handed both
times. Saint Rose plated its final two runs in the top of the
eighth on a two-run double by Ryan Ross.
Price finished with two hits in the
nightcap for the Golden Knights. Koby
Thibault (Salisbury, MA) and Scott Strong
(Naperville, IL) each had three hits for the Penmen while
Bill Murray (Canton, MA) added two hits.
Jake Kozar struck out 11 and
scattered seven hits to earn the win for Saint Rose. Doug
Dulin pitched a scoreless ninth to earn the save.
Mike Evans (Seabrook, NH) pitched the first four
innings for SNHU and took the loss, allowing four hits before
leaving with an injury.
SNHU and Saint Rose meet for the
third and final time this season Monday afternoon at 2:00 in
Albany.
