BOX SCORE
ALBANY, N.Y. - The
Southern New Hampshire University baseball team nearly rallied from
an 8-1 deficit, but fell 8-7 to The College of Saint Rose in a
Northeast-10 contest Monday afternoon at Bleecker Stadium.
The Golden Knights, who won their third in a row over the Penmen
and their fifth straight overall, improve to 6-13 and 4-0 in the
NE-10, while the Penmen are 2-9 and 0-3 in the league.
Tim Rines
(Northfield, NH) and Bill Murray (Canton, MA) each
finished with three hits for Southern New Hampshire, while
Skyler Byrd (Milford, NH) was 2-5 at the
plate. Victor Tolentino led Saint Rose with two hits and two
runs scored.
SNHU trailed 7-1 following a
four-run fifth for Saint Rose and the Golden Knights would tack on
another run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 8-1. The
Penmen would score three times in the top of the seventh.
Murray would deliver a two-run double down the left field line that
scored Eric Pelletier (Beverly, MA) and
Jeff Giannino (Beverly, MA). Rines, who
reached on a single earlier in the inning, would score on a wild
pitch by Golden Knight hurler Jeremiah St. Louis.
Rines and Murray would lead off the
top of the ninth with back-to-back singles. Rines would score
on a double by Byrd. Murray would score on a groundout by
Chris O'Neil (Chelmsford, MA) and Koby
Thibault (Salisbury, MA), pinch-running for Byrd, would
bring SNHU within one when he scored when Scott
Strong (Naperville, IL) reached on a Saint Rose
error. With the tying run aboard, Giannino flied out to end
the game.
Saint Rose jumped out to a 2-0 lead
in the bottom of the first, and after making it 3-0 on a leadoff
home run by Jake Perez in the fourth, scored four times in the
fifth to take a 7-1 lead. The hosts would score four runs
with the aid of just one hit, as they benefitted from four walks
and a Southern New Hampshire error. Pelletier had gotten the
Penmen on the board in the top of the frame when his groundout
scored Strong.
St. Louis earned the win for Saint
Rose, going 6.1 innings and fanning eight while scattering seven
hits. Greg Lyons (Canton, MA) took the loss
for the Penmen, working the first four and a third innings and
allowing eight hits and six runs, all earned. He struck out
four.
Southern New Hampshire returns to
action Tuesday afternoon when it travels to Bryant University for a
3:30 contest. That game was originally scheduled to be played
at SNHU but was moved to Bryant due to unplayable field conditions
in Manchester.
