MANCHESTER, N.H. -
Visiting Southern New Hampshire University posted a pair of one-run
victories to sweep Saint Anselm College in Northeast-10 baseball by
scores of 4-3 and 7-6 (11 innings) Saturday afternoon at Sullivan
Park. The Penmen improve to 6-20 and 4-14 in the NE-10, while
the Hawks are now 10-18 and 6-11 in the league.
In game two, the Penmen rallied
from a 6-3 deficit and scored twice in the top of the ninth inning
to force extra innings. In the ninth, Ryan
Thompson (Westford, MA) led off by drawing a walk and
advanced to third when Bill Murray (Canton, MA)
hit a one-out single. Thompson scored on a single by
Skyler Byrd (Milford, NH), while Murray scored the
tying run on a sacrifice fly by Chris O'Neil
(Chelmsford, MA).
Southern New Hampshire scored the
winning run in the top of the 11th when Murray led off with a
single. Byrd would reach on a bunt single, and both runners
would advance on a passed ball. O'Neil would lift a sac fly
to left that scored Murray. Greg Lyons
(Canton, MA) would come on in relief of winning pitcher
Mike Evans (Seabrook, NH) and retire the final two
batters to earn the save.
Byrd finished the nightcap with
four hits and drove in three runs, including a double in the fifth
that scored Tim Rines (Northfield, NH).
O'Neil also finished with three RBI, as his triple in the third
plated Murray for SNHU's second run. Murray also finished
with two hits.
In the opener, SNHU jumped out to a
1-0 lead in the top of the first when a double by Byrd brought home
Rines. The Penmen took a 2-0 lead in the fourth when
Jeff Giannino (Beverly, MA) belted a solo home
run. Saint Anselm would score three times in the bottom of
the fifth, taking advantage of four hits and a Penmen error.
Southern New Hampshire would score
twice in the top of the eighth to nail down the win. O'Neil
led off with a single and after Giannino walked, the duo was bunted
over by Scott Strong (Naperville, IL).
Koby Thibault (Salisbury, MA) tied the game when
he lifted a fly ball to right to score O'Neil. Giannino would
score the winning run when Eric Pelletier
(Beverly, MA) singled to center.
Byrd, Thibault and Pelletier all
finished with two hits apiece in the opener. Ryan
Quinn (Lebanon, CT) earned the win, going seven innings
and scattering nine hits. Evans earned the save for SNHU,
working the final two innings and allowing just one hit while
allowing three.
