COLCHESTER, Vt. -
Host Saint Michael's College scored six times in the bottom of the
eighth to forge an 11-11 tie then scored in the bottom of the ninth
to post a 12-11 baseball victory over Southern New Hampshire
University Wednesday afternoon at Doc Jacobs Field. The
Purple Knights, who compete as a Division II independent, improve
to 6-14, while the Penmen are now 6-23 overall.
Saint Michael's trailed the entire
game and fell behind 11-5 when the Penmen scored three times in the
top of the eighth as SNHU took advantage of two bases-loaded walks
and a hit by pitch. The Purple Knights would use four hits,
three walks, an error and a wild pitch to score six times and tie
the game at 11. SMC would score with two outs in the bottom
of the ninth when Matt Beaulieu worked a bases-loaded walkoff walk
to plate Ryan Reather.
SNHU scored single runs in the
first and second. Skyler Byrd (Milford, NH)
gave the Penmen a 1-0 lead when his first-inning double scored
Bill Murray (Canton, MA). Jeff
Giannino (Beverly, MA) would score from third in the
second when he took home after a throwing error on a stolen base
attempt. The Penmen made it 3-0 in the fourth when
Bob Wronski (Arlington, MA) singled to plate
Giannino.
The guests would up their lead to
7-0 in the top of the fifth. Byrd hit his second double of
the game to score Tim Rines (Northfield, NH),
while a two-run double by Chris O'Neil
(Chelmsford, MA) scored Byrd and Murray. Brett
Joy (Milford, NH) knocked in the other run when his single
scored O'Neil. Saint Michael's would get on the board with
two runs in the bottom of the fifth, and after another SNHU run in
the seventh, would score three times in the bottom of the seventh
to close the gap to 8-5.
Murray finished 4-6 with four runs
scored for Southern New Hampshire. Byrd, O'Neil and Joy all
registered a pair of hits, with O'Neil driving in three runs and
Joy two. Giannino also knocked in a pair of runs on the
afternoon.

(Seabrook, NH) took the loss for SNHU, the sixth and final pitcher
for the Penmen, working 1.1 innings. Starter Adam
Flynn (Derby Line, VT) went five innings and allowed just
two hits, but worked around six walks.
Southern New Hampshire returns to
action on Saturday when it hosts nationally-ranked Franklin Pierce
in a noon doubleheader.
