NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. - Carole Lee (Derry,
NH) totaled six goals and an assist to lead Southern New Hampshire
University to a 20-18 victory over Merrimack College in
Northeast-10 women's lacrosse at Warrior Field Tuesday night.
The win, the fourth straight for the Penmen, wraps up the No. 2
seed in the upcoming NE-10 Tournament as they improve to 10-5
overall and 9-1 in the NE-10, while the Warriors are now 8-5 and
7-3 in the league.
Lee tied the school record for
goals in a game that she also tied earlier this season against C.W.
Post. Nikki Downey (Rutland, VT) scored five
times, in the process becoming the fifth player in SNHU women's
lacrosse history to total 100 career points. Libby
Parent (Hinesburg, VT) notched three goals, and her 67
points this season are a school record, eclipsing the previous
record of 66..
Sherry Darrell
(Bow, NH) had two goals and two assists for Southern New Hampshire,
which also got two goals from Laura Rotolo
(Waltham, MA). Lucretia Joy (Portland, ME)
and Julie Kraus (Derry, NH) each had a goal and an
assist.
Merrimack led 7-4 with 12:41 left
in the first half when the Penmen scored six unanswered goals in a
span of 9:38 to take a 10-7 lead with 3:03 before halftime on a
Downey goal. SNHU would take an 11-8 lead into halftime.
The Warriors would cut the SNHU
lead to one, 15-14, with just over 11 minutes to play on a
Christina McCarron goal. The Penmen would respond by scoring
three goals in a 2:22 span, with back-to-back goals by Lee capped
by Downey's fifth of the game with 6:42 to play giving the guests
an 18-14 lead. The Warriors would cut the lead to two three
times down the stretch, the last coming with exactly one minute on
the clock, but could not get any closer.
Katie Clark
(Norwich, CT) made 19 saves in goal for Southern New Hampshire as
the Warriors held a 44-41 shot advantage.
SNHU closes out the regular season
with a non-league game at St. Thomas Aquinas Sunday. With the
No. 2 seed in the NE-10 Tournament, the Penmen have earned a
quarterfinal bye and will host a semifinal game on Friday, May 2.
