Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Stonehill

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Southern New Hampshire University and Stonehill College split a Northeast-10 baseball doubleheader at Penmen Field Saturday afternoon.  The Penmen took down a 2-1 win in game one while the Skyhawks came back to post a 7-1 win in the nightcap.  SNHU is now 7-29 overall and 5-22 in the NE-10, while the Skyhawks are 22-19 and 13-11 in the league.

In the opener, Mike Evans (Seabrook, NH) allowed just three hits on the mound for Southern New Hampshire en route to the victory.  He did not allow a hit until Mitch Davis' double down the left field line with one out in the sixth and struck out eight.  Greg Lyons (Canton, MA) came in and recorded the final two outs to earn the save, striking out Stonehill's Angelo Bruno with two men in scoring position to end the game.

SNHU's two runs came in the bottom of the fourth.  Scott Strong (Naperville, IL) would single through the right side with the bases loaded to score Bill Murray (Canton, MA), who opened the inning by reaching on an error.  The second run would score when Eric Pelletier (Beverly, MA) reached on an infield single and Skyler Byrd (Milford, NH) scored from third.

Byrd finished with three hits in the opener, while Tim Rines (Northfield, NH) and Pelletier each had a pair of hits as the Penmen outhit the Skyhawks 9-3.

Stonehill got the bats going early in game two, as it took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-run home run by Dave Fredette.  The Skyhawks would add two more runs in the third on a two-run single by Nate Weber, then scored a solo run in the sixth and two more in the seventh.  The lone Penmen run would come in the bottom of the eighth when a single to the gap in right center by Rines scored Strong, who led off the inning with a double.

Rines had a pair of hits in the nightcap, while Weber paced the Skyhawks with two hits and three RBI.  Lyons took the loss for Southern New Hampshire, allowing six hits and five runs (two earned) in six innings of work.

SNHU and Stonehill will play the rubber game of the season series Sunday at Stonehill.
