LOWELL, Mass. -
Host UMass Lowell swept both ends of a Northeast-10 baseball
doubleheader with Southern New Hampshire University by scores of
2-0 and 3-1 Saturday evening at Lelacheur Park. The River
Hawks improved to 10-14 and 7-3 in the NE-10, while the Penmen are
now 4-16 and 2-10 in the league.
In the opener, UML plated both of
their runs in the bottom of the sixth. Tim Manton and Tim
Keene led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Manton
came home when Luke Wallace grounded out, and Keene scored on a
sacrifice fly to center.
Bill Murray
(Canton, MA) and Jeff Giannino (Beverly, MA) had
the two SNHU hits in the opener. Greg Lyons
(Canton, MA) hurled seven innings for the Penmen, scattering nine
River Hawk hits while striking out five.
Southern New Hampshire jumped out
to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second in the nightcap when
Chris O'Neil (Chelmsford, MA) worked a leadoff
walk and came home when Brett Joy (Milford, NH)
reached on a fielders' choice. UMass Lowell would tie the
game in the bottom of the frame and add single runs in the fourth
and fifth innings.
Skyler Byrd
(Milford, NH) led SNHU with a pair of hits in the nightcap.
SNHU and UML complete their season
series Sunday afternoon at Lelacheur Park with a 1:00 game.
The Penmen will play as the home team as the game was originally
scheduled to be played in Manchester.
