Women's Tennis Fares Well on Day One of ITA East Regional

DAY ONE DOUBLES RESULTS

PHILADELPHIA - The Southern New Hampshire University women's tennis team fared well on the first day of the 2008 Wilson/ITA Regional Championship hosted by Chestnut Hill College on Friday.  The Penmen had three players advance to the third round of the 48-player singles tournament, while placing two doubles tandems into the second round of the 24-team doubles tourney.

In the singles draw, fifth-seeded sophomore Amber Chandronnait (Bow, NH) drew a first-round bye, then in the second round defeated Maria Perevezentseva of Queens College 6-0 6-0.  She will face ninth-seeded Shakir Willett of Holy Family University in Saturday morning's third round (9:00 am).

Sophomore Catalina Echeverry (Cali, Colombia), the No. 12 seed, also earned a first-round bye, then topped Maria Ortiz of Concordia College 6-1 6-3.  She will play Saint Rose's Rebecca Moon Saturday morning.

Graduate student Lauren Nigrelli (Westerly, RI) also advanced to the quarterfinals, upending Zahra Hasan of University of the Sciences 10-2 and Erin Andersen of Chestnut Hill 6-2 6-0.  She will face second-seeded Laura Mocodeanu of Queens Saturday.

Junior Alison Waring (Westboro, MA) fell in the first round, falling to Cristina Oliveira of Concordia 10-0.

In doubles play, Chandronnait and Nigrelli teamed up to defeat Moon and Rachael O'Brien of Saint Rose 8-3, while Echeverry and Waring topped Brittany Aimone and Caitlyn Lawrence of Georgian Court University 8-2.  In the quarterfinals, Chandronnait and Nigrelli will face Mocodeanu and Kirby Reiss from Queens, while Echeverry and Waring will face the Queens duo of Maria Mendes and Alyssa Morra.
