PHILADELPHIA - Sophomore Amber
Chandronnait (Bow, NH) of the Southern New Hampshire
University women's tennis team captured the singles championship of
the 2008 Wilson/ITA East Regional hosted by Chestnut Hill College
on Sunday afternoon. Chandronnait, who entered the tournament
as the fifth seed, bested a field of 48 players to capture the
title.
Chandronnait now advances to play
in the ITA National Small College Championships Presented by the
USTA on October 16-19 in Mobile, Alabama.
In the semifinals, Chandronnait
bested unseeded Cristina Oliveira of Concordia College 6-1, 6-4 and
advanced to the championship where she faced 11th-seeded
Maria Mendes of Queens. Mendes bested Queens teammate and No.
2 seed Laura Mocodeanu 7-6 (5), 7-5. In the championship,
Chandronnait won by a score of 6-1, 6-0.
Chandronnait, who is in her first
season at SNHU, transferred from the University of Nebraska.
As a freshman for the Huskers, she posted a 19-8 singles record and
a 31-19 overall mark. Chandronnait played tennis at Bow HS
for two years and was undefeated in two seasons while leading the
Falcons to a pair of state titles.
