MANCHESTER, N.H. -
A goal by Justin Colella with just over nine minutes remaining in
the first half proved to be the difference as eighth-seeded Saint
Anselm College topped No. 1 seed Southern New Hampshire University
1-0 in the quarterfinals of the 2009 Northeast-10 Men's Soccer
Championship Sunday at Larkin Field. The Hawks improve to
7-8-3 and advance to face fourth-seeded Southern Connecticut in
Wednesday's semifinals. The Penmen now stand 13-4-2 overall
and must wait until Monday, November 9, to see if they will earn a
berth to the NCAA Division II tournament.
On the goal, Colella took a pass
from Paul Kilday, who was standing at the top of the box.
Standing at the top left corner of the 18, Colella bent a shot that
found the top right corner of the SNHU goal.
Saint Anselm keeper Eric Moriarty
made five saves, all in the second half, to preserve the shutout
for the Hawks. Sean Lambert (Rehoboth,
Mass.) did not make a save for the Penmen. The Penmen outshot
the Hawks 16-5, including an 11-2 advantage in the second half.
