SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.V. - Chris
O'Neil (Chelmsford, MA) homered in the top of the
seventh inning to lift Southern New Hampshire University to a 4-3
seven-inning win in game two of a baseball doubleheader with
Shepherd University at Fairfax Field Saturday afternoon. The
Penmen improved to 1-2 with the split, while the Rams, who took
game one by a 7-0 score, are now 5-4 overall.
The win marked the first career
victory for first-year SNHU head coach Scott Loiseau.
Southern New Hampshire trailed 3-2
going into the top of the seventh inning when Scott Strong
(Naperville, IL) walked to lead off the inning. After
advancing to second on a passed ball, Strong stole third and then
came home when Eric Pelletier
(Beverly, MA) grounded out for the second out of the inning.
O'Neil then delivered the go-ahead run on his solo home run to
left.
Shepherd would get runners to
second and third with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but
Derek
Anderson (Dracut, MA) would strikeout Drew McCormick
then get Brett Caplan to ground out to second to earn the save.
The Penmen would stake themselves
to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first courtesy a solo home run by
Jeff
Giannino (Beverly, MA), but Shepherd would score three
times in the top of the first, using four hits while taking
advantage of a pair of Penmen errors. Southern New Hampshire
cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the fifth when Pelletier reached
base with two outs on an error, then came home on a single by
Tim
Rines (Merrimack, NH).
O'Neil finished with two of SNHU's
six hits in the nightcap, while Nate Minnich led Shepherd with
three hits. Steve Golbranson
(Abington, MA) earned the win for the Penmen, scattering 10 hits in
six-plus innings of work, fanning four while allowing a pair of
earned runs. Reliever Adam Lauer took the loss for Shepherd.
In the opener, Pat Smith and Kenny
Reisinger combined to allow just one Penmen hit, a Strong single in
the fifth. Shepherd jumped on top with four runs in the
bottom of the first and added single runs in each of the final
three innings. Brad Monroe
(Hampton Falls, NH) took the loss for SNHU, allowing a pair of
earned runs while surrendering 10 hits and striking out five in 4.2
innings of work.
Southern New Hampshire returns to
action Sunday when it travels to Columbia Union College for a noon
doubleheader.
