BOX SCORE
RINDGE, N.H. - Junior Steve Golbranson
(Abington, MA) fired a complete-game six hit shutout to lead
Southern New Hampshire University to a 2-0 win over Franklin Pierce
University in Northeast-10 baseball Tuesday afternoon at Pappas
Field. The Penmen, who have now won five in a row for the
first time since 2006, improved to 6-8 and 3-0 in the NE-10, while
the Ravens are now 7-10 and 0-1 in the league.
SNHU's win was the first over the
Ravens since an 8-6 victory on April 17, 2003, a span of 14 games.
The Penmen would score both of
their runs in the top of the sixth inning. Tim Rines
(Merrimack, NH) led off the inning with a single to shortstop then
advanced to second when the ball was thrown away. The next
batter, Skyler
Byrd (Milford, NH) walked, then Joe Gargan (Hudson,
NH) would ground a ball back to FPU pitcher Brian Maloney.
Maloney would try to get Rines at third but committed an
error. Scott Strong (Naperville, IL) would then single to
right center to plate both Rines and Byrd.
Franklin Pierce's best chance to
score came in the bottom of the ninth as it loaded the bases with
two out following a walk by Eric Pearson and Golbranson hitting
Mike Dowd. Golbranson would then get out of the jam by
getting Ben Beningo to ground back to the mound, and Golbranson
would throw out Derek Ingui at the plate. Ingui had led off
the inning with a double.
Golbranson improved to 3-0,
allowing just six hits while striking out nine and walking two in
his complete-game effort. FPU starter Mike Adams took the
loss, working 5-plus innings and allowing four hits while striking
out six. Eric Pelletier
(Beverly, MA) had two hits for Southern New Hampshire, while Dowd
had two of FPU's six hits.
Southern New Hampshire returns to
action Wednesday when it travels to Assumption College for a 3:30
