MANCHESTER, N.H. - A goal by Libby
Parent (Hinesburg, VT) with 38 seconds remaining capped a
six-goal Southern New Hampshire University rally as it knocked off
No. 9 Dowling College 11-10 in women's lacrosse Friday evening
at Larkin Field. The Penmen won their third in a row to
improve to 4-2 overall, while the Golden Lions suffered their first
loss of the season and are now 3-1.
SNHU trailed 8-3 at halftime and
10-5 with 17:29 to play following a goal by Dowling's Kelly
Cefalu. Parent got the run going at the 15:19 mark on an goal
assisted by Jennifer Parro (Ipswich, MA), then
Lucretia Joy (Portland, ME) cut it to 10-7 at the
12:09 mark. SNHU drew to within one, 10-9, on goals by
Emily Mongeau (Westborough, MA) and Parent 53
seconds apart with just over five minutes to play.
Parro would tie the game with 3:21
left when she converted a free position shot. With just under
two minutes left, Joy forced a Dowling turnover and after a
successful clear, worked the ball around. Carole
Lee (Derry, NH), standing behind the goal, found a cutting
Parent for the game-winner with 38 seconds left. SNHU would
control the final draw and run out the clock.
Southern New Hampshire got on the
board first on a goal by Parro 4:23 into the game, but Dowling
would score the next five goals and take a 5-1 lead midway through
the first half on a goal by Allison Smith. Laura
Rotolo (Waltham, MA) and Lee scored 22 seconds apart, with
Lee's goal coming with 8:07 left in the first half, but the Golden
Lions scored the final three goals of the first half to lead 8-3 at
the break.
Parent led the Penmen with three
goals, while Parro totaled two goals and an assist. Mongeau
had a pair of goals while Lee finished with a goal and an
assist. Cassandra Cronin led Dowling with four goals while
Cefalu scored twice.
Katie Clark
(Norwich, CT) played the second half in goal for SNHU and made
three saves while allowing just a pair of goals. Rachel
Goldstein made nine saves in a complete-game effort for Dowling.
SNHU faces its second-straight
nationally-ranked opponent on Monday when it hosts Stonehill
College for a 4:00 contest.
NOTES: Senior
Maura Murphy (Candia, NH) recorded her 100th
career goal Friday, the second player in SNHU program history to do
so.
