NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. - The Southern New Hampshire
University baseball team picked up a split of a Northeast-10
doubleheader with Merrimack College Saturday afternoon. The
Warriors posted a 1-0 win in game one, while the Penmen posted a
3-2 win in the nightcap. SNHU is now 8-10 overall and 5-2 in
the NE-10, while Merrimack is 10-8 and 1-3 in the league.
In game two, SNHU fell behind 2-0
when Merrimack scored single runs in the first and fourth innings,
but the Penmen would get on the board in the top of the
sixth. Scott Strong (Naperville, IL) led off
the inning with a single, then after a single to right-center by
Skyler Byrd (Milford, NH), a single by
Bobby Wronski (Arlington, MA) scored Strong.
The Penmen tacked on two runs in
the top of the eighth with two outs to take the lead and earn the
win. Joe Gargan (Hudson, NH) got the rally
started with a single down the left field line, then Jeff
Giannino (Beverly, MA) would walk. Joe
Santos (Holliston, MA) singled up the middle to score
Gargan, while a double by Curtis Burke (Bristol,
RI) plated Giannino. Santos also tried to score from first
but was gunned down at the plate.
Wronski and Burke each had three
hits to pace the Penmen. Derek Anderson
(Dracut, MA) earned the win on the mound for SNHU, working 7.2
innings and allowing six hits and two runs (one earned) while
fanning eight. Steve Golbranson (Abington,
MA) worked the final 1.1 innings and allowed one hit for the save.
In the opener Merrimack would score
the game's only run in the second inning. Andrew Johnson got
on with a one-out single and scored on a base hit up the middle by
Bob McCarthy. The Penmen's best chance to tie the game came
in the sixth when Eric Pelletier (Beverly, MA) led off the inning
with a single and nearly scored on a single by Byrd, but got caught
in a rundown.
Gargan and Strong had the other
Penmen hits in the opener as they were outhit 6-4.
A.J. Dusablon (Burlington, VT) took the loss on
the mound, working six innings and allowing just four hits while
striking out three. Dylan Ellis allowed just four hits and
fanned eight in a complete-game effort for Merrimack to pick up the
win.
SNHU and Merrimack are scheduled to
conclude their three-game series Sunday at SNHU's Penmen Field,
with first pitch set for 1:00.
