MANCHESTER, N.H. - Visiting Saint Anselm College scored
twice in the fourth inning to break a 1-1 deadlock and go on to
post a 3-1 Northeast-10 baseball victory over Southern New
Hampshire University at Penmen Field Tuesday afternoon. The
Hawks improved to 8-11 overall and 4-2 in the NE-10, while the
Penmen are now 8-11 and 5-3 in the league.
Daniel DeCoste opened the fourth
with a walk for Saint Anselm, then advanced to third when James
Garrigan doubled to right. DeCoste would score when Matt
Sucharewicz singled through the right side, then Garrigan made it
3-1 when Evan Kelleher flied out to left.
The Hawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead
in the top of the third when Ben Gunn hit a one-out triple down the
right field line. He would score when Tim Murphy singled to
right-center. The Penmen would tie the game in the bottom of
the frame. Tim Rines (Merrimack,
NH) reached on an error to lead off the inning, and moved to second
on a bunt single by Chris O'Neil
(Chelmsford, MA). The pair would move over on a sacrifice
bunt by Scott
Strong (Naperville, IL), and Rines would score when
Skyler
Byrd (Milford, NH) hit a broken-bat groundout to
third.
Garrigan led the Hawks with a pair
of hits as Saint Anselm outhit Southern New Hampshire 9-3.
John Healy earned the win for the Hawks, working seven innings and
fanning eight while not allowing an earned run. Tim Cooney
did not allow a hit over the final two innings for the Hawks to
earn the save.
Steve Golbranson
(Abington, MA) took his first loss of the season for the Penmen,
working 3.1 innings and allowing six hits and three runs while
striking out four. Bryant Gauthier
(Lynn, MA) allowed just two hits in 4.2 innings of relief for the
Penmen.
Southern New Hampshire returns to
action Wednesday when it hosts Assumption College in a 3:30 game at
Penmen Field.
