N.Y. - Molloy College swept a baseball doubleheader from
Southern New Hampshire University Saturday by scores of 3-1 and 6-5
at Baseball Heaven on Saturday. The Lions improve to 4-1 with
the wins, while the Penmen now stand at 1-4 on the season.
In the first game, SNHU jumped out
to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Joe Gargan
(Hudson, NH) led off the inning with a double to left field, then
advanced to third on a balk by Molloy pitcher Justin
Jorgensen. Scott Strong
(Naperville, IL) would drive Gargan in on a groundout to shortstop.
The Lions took the lead with two
runs in the bottom of the third. Carmine Pellechia reached on
a one-out single then scored on a single to right by Patrick
Walsh. Walsh later scored when T.J. Greig reached on a SNHU
error. Molloy later scored in the bottom of the sixth when
Greig led off the frame with a double. He came home on a sac
fly by Keith Kenny.
Jorgensen hurled seven innings to
earn the win for Molloy, allowing four hits while fanning
seven. Michael Maddi threw two innings of scoreless relief to
earn the save. Ryan Quinn (Lebanon, CT)
went the distance on the mound for the Penmen, allowing four hits
and two earned runs in eight innings while striking out nine.
Southern New Hampshire found itself
down 4-0 after one inning in game two, the big blow coming on a
three-run home run by Robert LaRusso. The Penmen would climb
back, scoring twice in the fifth and three times in the sixth to
take a 5-4 lead before Molloy scored twice in the bottom of the
sixth of the seven-inning game.
In the fifth, Koby Thibault
(Salisbury, MA) singled with one out, then scored on a sacrifice
fly by Curtis
Burke (Bristol, RI). Eric Pelletier
(Beverly, MA) cut the lead to 4-2 with his solo home run.
Southern New Hampshire belted two more home runs in the sixth, with
Jeff
Giannino (Beverly, MA) hitting a two-run home run that
scored Strong, who led off the inning with a single.
Bob
Wronski (Arlington, MA) scored the go-ahead run on a
homer to left center.
Molloy reclaimed the lead when
Steve Rodriguez reached on an error with one out, then later scored
on a single by Joseph Menendez. Frank Marchisello,
pinch-running for Menendez, scored the winning run on a single by
Pellechia.
Wronski had a pair of hits to lead
Southern New Hampshire, while Walsh had a pair of hits for the
Lions. Daniel Pelan pitched two innings of relief to earn the
win for Molloy. Brad Monroe (Hampton
Falls, NH) pitched 5.1 innings for SNHU, allowing five hits and
four earned runs while striking out six.
SNHU and Molloy play another
twinbill at Baseball Heaven Sunday at noon.
