YAPHANK, N.Y. - Molloy College rallied
for a 13-12, 12-inning baseball victory over Southern New Hampshire
University in game one of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at
Baseball Heaven, then completed the sweep with an 8-4 win in the
nightcap. The Lions improved to 6-1 with the victories, while
the Penmen now stand at 1-6 on the season.
In the opener, SNHU plated seven
runs in the top of the first inning. The Penmen banged out
five hits, including a leadoff home run by Chris O'Neil
(Chelmsford, MA) and a two-run triple by Joseph Gargan (Hudson,
NH). Southern New Hampshire sent 11 men to the plate, with
O'Neil also delivering an RBI single in his second trip to the
plate. The Penmen also knocked Lion starter Michael Vecchione
out after just 2/3 of an inning of work.
Molloy plated three runs in the
bottom of the eighth to cut the SNHU lead to 10-9, but the Penmen
would score twice in the top of the ninth to take a 12-9
lead. O'Neil cracked his second home run of the game to right
center with two outs, then the next batter, Tim Rines
(Merrimack, NH) singled to left. A double by Jeff Giannino
(Beverly, MA) would plate Rines.
The Lions scored three times in the
bottom of the ninth, with T.J. Greig registering a two-run single
with two outs to tie the game 12-12. Greig would once again
be the hero for Molloy in the bottom of the 12th as he
led off the inning with a walkoff home run to right.
O'Neil, Rines and Scott Strong
(Naperville, IL) each had three hits for Southern New Hampshire,
with O'Neil and Gargan each driving in three runs. Derek Anderson
(Dracut, MA) took the loss for SNHU, working 3.2 innings of
relief. Greig had a 5-7 game at the plate for the Lions,
knocking in four runs. Michael Maddi earned the win, hurling
three innings of one-hit relief.
In the nightcap, Molloy jumped out
to a 3-0 lead after one inning and held a 7-0 advantage after four
innings. The Penmen scored all four of their runs in the
seventh and final frame, with Gargan driving in Rines on a double
to right and Strong belting a three-run home run to left-center.
A.J. Dusablon
(Burlington, VT) pitched the first four innings for the Penmen,
allowing six earned runs on six hits. Eric Williams picked up
the win for Molloy, pitching a complete-game six hitter.
Southern New Hampshire returns to
action next weekend when it travels to C.W. Post for doubleheaders
on Saturday and Sunday.
NOTES: With 10
home runs through its first seven games, Southern New Hampshire has
matched last season's total...Strong batted .375 in the four-game
series with Molloy and hit safely in all four games.
