MANCHESTER, N.H. - Southern New Hampshire University and
Assumption College battled to a 3-3 tie through 13 innings of
baseball at Penmen Field before the game was halted due to
darkness Wednesday afternoon. The game will be declared a
tie, with SNHU now 8-11-1 overall and 5-3-1 in the NE-10, while the
Greyhounds are 12-10-1 and 5-3-1 in the league.
SNHU tied the game with two outs in
the bottom of the ninth. Curtis Burke (Bristol,
RI) led off the inning with a single to left field. He would
be bunted over by Scott Strong
(Naperville, IL) and after a groundout by Tim Rines (Merrimack,
NH) moved Burke to third, Skyler Byrd (Milford,
NH) drove in the game-tying run with a single to right.
Assumption jumped out to a 1-0 lead
in the top of the first when Mike Baillargeon doubled to lead off
the game and came home on a single by Derek Migrants. The
Penmen tied the game in the bottom of the frame when a groundout by
Byrd played Burke, who reached as the leadoff batter when he was
hit by a pitch.
The Greyhounds took a 2-1 lead in
the third on a solo home run by Baillargeon. The Penmen would
tie the game in the bottom of the third when a single by Byrd
plated Rines. Assumption made it a 3-2 game in the sixth when
Migrants led off the inning with a home run to center field.
Garrett
Jewell (Alexandria, NH) was 5-6 at the plate for
the Penmen, while Byrd was 4-6 while driving in all three
Penmen runs. Strong and Jeff Giannino
(Beverly, MA) each finished with three hits for
SNHU. Baillargeon and Migrants each finished
with three hits for Assumption, which was outhit 16-9.
Penmen starter Ryan Quinn (Lebanon, CT)
went 10 innings and allowed eight hits and three runs while fanning
eight. Zach Jacques went seven innings for the Greyhounds and
allowed nine hits.
Southern New Hampshire returns to
action on Thursday afternoon when it travels to Saint Anselm
College for a 3:30 doubleheader.
