Women's Lacrosse Rallies to Upset No. 8 New Haven 13-12

MANCHESTER, N.H. - A goal by Carole Lee (Derry, NH) with 23 seconds remaining gave Southern New Hampshire its only lead of the game as the Penmen went on to knock off eighth-ranked University of New Haven 13-12 in Northeast-10 women's lacrosse Saturday afternoon at Larkin Field.  The Penmen won their fifth straight game to improve to 9-3 overall and 6-1 in the NE-10, while the Chargers suffered their first conference loss and are now 9-3 and 5-1 in the league.

Emily Mongeau (Westborough, MA) led the Penmen with four goals on the afternoon.  Libby Parent (Hinesburg, VT) tallied a goal and six assists, with her six assists tying a single-game school record.  Lucretia Joy (Portland, ME) finished with two goals and two assists, while Lee had two goals and an assist.  Julie Kraus (Derry, NH) and Jennifer Parro (Ipswich, MA) each notched a goal and an assist while Sherry Darrell (Bow, NH) and Maura Murphy (Candia, NH) each had single goals for Southern New Hampshire.

Sarah Magnone led New Haven with four goals while Ashley Ferrandiz had two goals and an assist and Carolina Marrero scored twice.

Southern New Hampshire, which trailed by as many as six goals in the first half, was down 10-5 2:47 into the second half following a goal by Ferrandiz.  Darrell and Mongeau scored goals in a 34 second span to cut it to 10-7 with 22:26 to play, but Mallory Ferrandiz would score 49 seconds later to make it an 11-7 game.  Parent and Lee scored 25 seconds apart to make it 11-9 with 16:10 remaining, but Marrero would score off a feed from Sarah LeGoff at the 13:23 mark to make it 12-9.

Mongeau would get the final Penmen run started with a free position goal with 9:31 left.  Parro scored with 7:50 on the clock on a feed from Parent, and Murphy would tie the game up with 5:03 left on another Parent assist.  Joy would control the draw for the hosts, and Southern New Hampshire would run down the clock.  Two shots by Parent and Parro were wide, but Parent would collect Parro's miss and feed it to a cutting Lee, who found the back of the net.  SNHU's Laura Rotolo (Waltham, MA) would control the ensuing draw and the Penmen ran out the clock.

New Haven and SNHU traded the game's first four goals before the Chargers reeled off six unanswered goals to take an 8-2 lead with 8:19 left in the first half on Mangone tally.  Mongeau and Kraus would strike in a 55-second span for the Penmen to cut the lead to four, and the two teams would trade final goals in the first half, with Mongeau scoring 2:23 before intermission to make it 9-5 at the break.

Hannah Moriarty (Chelmsford, MA) played the second half in goal in relief of Katie Clark (Norwich, CT) and earned the win, allowing three goals while making five saves.  Clark turned aside three shots.  New Haven goalie Maureen Spellman made eight saves in the loss as the Penmen outshot the Chargers 29-21, including a 19-9 advantage in the second half.

Southern New Hampshire plays its final regular season home game of the season Wednesday when it hosts Bentley University in a 4:00 contest.

NOTES: Parent tied the single-game assist record established four times by Parro, the most recent coming earlier this season against Molloy...Parent has now scored at least one goal in 44 straight games...Saturday's win marks the second time Southern New Hampshire has rallied to defeat a nationally-ranked opponent this season, as the Penmen scored the game's final six goals in an 11-10 win over No. 9 Dowling on March 27.
