MANCHESTER, N.H. - Visiting UMass Lowell scored five times
in the game's first two innings en route to a 7-3 Northeast-10
baseball win over Southern New Hampshire University at Penmen Field
Thursday afternoon. The River Hawks improve to 18-11 overall
and 10-7 in the NE-10, while the Penmen are now 11-19-1 overall and
8-11-1 in the league.
Tim Keene led UMass Lowell with
three hits and a pair of runs batted in while Pat Devlin and Luke
Wallace also recorded two hits apiece. Bobby
Wronski (Arlington, MA) had a pair of hits for the Penen,
while Eric Pelletier (Beverly, MA) singled in the
fifth inning to extend his hitting streak to nine games.
Tim Rines (Merrimack, NH), Chris
O'Neil (Chelmsford, MA) and Skyler Byrd
(Milford, NH) all hit safely for Southern New Hampshire to extend
their hit streaks to eight games apiece.
UMass Lowell would bang out four
hits, including a two-run double by Taylor von Kriegenbergh, to
plate three runs in the top of the first. The Penmen would
get a run back in the bottom of the frame when a double by Rines
plated Scott Strong (Naperville, IL), but the
River Hawks would tack on two runs in the top of the second and
another in the fourth to take a 6-1 lead.
Southern New Hampshire would plate
single runs in the fourth and fifth to make it a 6-3 game. In
the fourth, Byrd led off the inning with a single, and after
Wronski doubled, scored on a groundout by Richard
Pecoraro (Hampton Bays, NY). Strong would lead off
the fifth with a double to right center and score when the next
batter, Pelletier, singled. The River Hawks scored their
final run in the eighth when Devlin led off with a double and came
home on a sacrifice fly by Tim Keene.
Ted Haley worked seven innings for
UMass Lowell and allowed six hits while striking out nine to earn
the victory. Steve Golbranson (Abington, MA)
went seven innings for the Penmen, allowing 12 hits and six runs
(five earned) while fanning six to take the loss.
Southern New Hampshire returns to
action Saturday when it travels to the University of New Haven for
a noon doubleheader.
