WEST HAVEN, Conn. - Southern New Hampshire University and the University of New Haven split a Northeast-10 baseball doubleheader at Frank Vieira Field Saturday, with the Penmen recording a 3-2 win in the opener before the Chargers notched an 8-4 win in the nightcap.  SNHU is now 12-20-1 overall and 9-12-1 in the NE-10, while the Chargers are 15-14 and 11-10 in the league.

In the opener, Southern New Hampshire got a complete-game effort on the mound from senior Ryan Quinn (Lebanon, CT).  Quinn scattered seven hits while striking out 11 while recording his fifth complete game of the season.

New Haven took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on an unearned run before the Penmen took the lead with a pair of runs in the third.  Joe Santos (Holliston, MA) and Scott Strong (Naperville, IL) led off the inning with back-to-back singles.  The pair was moved over on a groundout by Eric Pelletier (Beverly, MA), then Santos would score on a groundout by Tim Rines (Merrimack, NH).  Strong would cross the plate on a double down the left field line by Bobby Wronski (Arlington, MA).

Wronski would score the third Southern New Hampshire run in the sixth.  After reaching on a one-out single, Wronski moved to third on a double by Chris O'Neil (Chelmsford, MA) and scored on a single to center by Skyler Byrd (Milford, NH).

New Haven made it 3-2 in the seventh when Kyle Donnelly led off with a single and eventually scored on a wild pitch.  The Chargers would load the bases with one away in the eighth, but Quinn got Cory Carr to pop out to right then got Donnelly swinging to end the threat.

Wronski had two of SNHU's eight hits in the opener, while Ryan Brockett led New Haven with three hits.

SNHU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of the second game.  Strong led off the game with a triple and would score on a groundout by Pelletier.  Rines and Wronski would hit back-to-back singles then score on a triple by O'Neil.  O'Neil was gunned out at the plate trying to stretch it to an inside-the-park home run.  New Haven would tie the game by scoring one in the first and two more in the third.

The Penmen would take a 4-3 lead in the sixth.  Rines led off the frame with a single and after advancing to second on a wild pitch, scored when Wronski reached on an error.  New Haven would tie the game in the bottom half with two away when Carr came home from third on a two-out, bases loaded balk.  The Chargers would put the game away by scoring four times in the eighth, using four hits, a walk, an error and a passed ball.

Strong and Rines each had a pair of hits in the nightcap, while O'Neil was 1-3 with two RBI to extend his hitting streak to 10 games.  Tom Rombilus was 2-5 with a pair of RBI to lead New Haven.  Ryan Hagan (Bedford, NH) took the loss for the Penmen, allowing four hits and four runs (three earned) in two innings of relief.  SNHU starter Derek Anderson (Dracut, MA) worked 5.2 innings, allowing five hits and four runs while fanning three.

Southern New Hampshire and New Haven meet in the rubber game of the series Sunday at noon at Penmen Field.
