MANCHESTER, N.H. - Southern New Hampshire University broke
a 4-4 tie with four runs in the eighth inning en route to an 8-5
Northeast-10 baseball victory over The College of Saint Rose at
Penmen Field Tuesday afternoon. The Penmen improved to
14-22-1 overall and 10-15-1 in the NE-10 with the win, while the
Golden Knights fall to 19-14 and 12-14 in the league.
Southern New Hampshire scored four
runs on just one hit in the bottom of the eighth, taking advantage
of five Saint Rose errors and a walk. Joe
Gargan (Hudson, NH) had a sacrifice fly to right, while
Scott Strong (Naperville, IL) followed it up with
a single to center that plate Curtis Burke
(Bristol, RI).
Saint Rose would load the bases
with no one out in the top of the ninth, but relief pitcher
Brad Monroe (Hampton Falls, NH) got Jake Perez to
ground into a double play, with Garret Keenan coming in the back
door. Monroe would then get Dominick Iaconis to strike out
looking to end the game.
SNHU took a 1-0 lead in the bottom
of the second when Bobby Wronski (Arlington, MA)
doubled to lead off the inning and eventually scored on a single
through the left side by Jeff Giannino (Beverly,
MA). The Golden Knights would tie the game on a solo home run
to center by Derek Marshall in the fifth, but Wronski would deliver
a two-run blast in the sixth to give the Penmen a 3-1 lead.
The hosts scored again in the frame when a Giannino double plated
Chris O'Neil (Chelmsford, MA), who had extended
his hit streak to 14 games with a double after Wronski's homer.
Saint Rose closed to within 4-3 in
the seventh on a two-run homer by Keenan, then tied the game one
inning later when Ryan Burke worked a one-out walk and scored on a
sacrifice fly by Ryan Price.
Ryan Quinn
(Lebanon, CT) went eight innings for the Penmen and allowed six
hits while fanning 10 and issuing just two walks. Monroe
earned his second save of the season. Wronski and Giannino
each finished with a pair of hits as Southern New Hampshire outhit
Saint Rose 7-6.

Saint Rose for a 3:30 pm game Thursday afternoon.
