WEST HAVEN, Conn. - Third-seeded Southern New Hampshire
University earned its second straight trip to the Northeast-10
Women's Lacrosse Championship title game with an 11-9 win over No.
2 seed Stonehill College in an NE-10 semifinal played at
DellaCamera Stadium on the campus of the University of New Haven
Saturday afternoon. The Penmen, who posted their first-ever
victory over the Skyhawks, improved to 13-4 overall and advance to
play the top-seeded and host Chargers Sunday at 1:00.
Stonehill, which failed to reach the NE-10 championship game for
the first time in program history, is now 10-6 overall.
Emily Mongeau
(Westborough, MA) led Southern New Hampshire with three goals,
while Libby Parent (Hinesburg, VT) totaled two
goals and an assist. Laura Rotolo (Waltham,
MA) and Maura Murphy (Candia, NH) each scored
twice, while Jennifer Parro (Ipswich, MA) notched
a goal and two assists. Brittany Whiteway
(Billerica, MA) added a goal for the Penmen.
Michelle Salmon and Jackie Ladino
paced Stonehill with three goals apiece.
Southern New Hampshire never
trailed and took a 1-0 lead 1:30 into the game when Parro scored
off a feed from Parent. The Penmen took a 3-1 lead with 14:38
left in the first half on a goal by Murphy, but the Skyhawks would
score twice in a 26-second span and Mary Maloney tied the game with
7:19 to go in the first half. The game would remain knotted
at 3-3 heading into intermission.
Mongeau and Rotolo scored twice in
a 13-second span for SNHU to put the Penmen up 5-3 2:04 into the
second half. The two teams would trade goals for the next
nine minutes, but Stonehill would get back-to-back goals by Salmon
to tie the game 7-7 with 14:52 to play. Parent put Southern
New Hampshire back on top with two goals in 14 seconds at 11:51 and
11:37, and Whiteway would give the Penmen a three-goal advantage
with 8:52 remaining.
Stonehill would close back within
one, 11-10, when Ladino and Kiley Corson scored 26 seconds apart,
with Corson scoring her first goal of the season with 6:22
left. Mongeau scored an unassisted tally with 4:07 left to
make it 11-9. SNHU's Katie Clark (Norwich,
CT) made a big save on a shot attempt by Salmon with 1:45 to go,
and the Penmen would essentially run out the clock after a
successful clear.
Clark made five saves for the
Penmen as Southern New Hampshire outshot New Haven 26-18.
Justine Ferland turned aside nine shots for the Skyhawks.
SNHU fell 17-10 to Stonehill in its
first trip to the NE-10 championship game last season. New
Haven is in its first season as a member of the Northeast-10.
The Penmen dealt the Chargers their only loss in conference play,
as SNHU defeated New Haven 13-12 in Manchester on April 11.
