Women's Lacrosse Falls to New Haven in NE-10 Title Game

BOX SCORE

WEST HAVEN, Conn. - Top seed and tournament host University of New Haven captured the 2009 Northeast-10 women's lacrosse championship with a 12-7 win over third-seeded Southern New Hampshire University at DellaCamera Stadium Sunday afternoon.  The Chargers, who avenged their only conference loss during the regular season, improved to 16-3 and will likely earn a berth to the NCAA Division II Women's Lacrosse Championship when berths are announced Sunday night.  The Penmen, who were making their second-straight appearance in the NE-10 title game, see their season come to a close at 13-5, with the 13 wins a single-season school record.

Brigid Brady led New Haven with four goals, while Briana Kenworthy scored three times and Ashley Ferrandiz totaled two goals.

Libby Parent (Hinesburg, VT) and Maura Murphy (Candia, NH) led SNHU with three goals apiece, while Emily Mongeau (Westborough, MA) added a goal and an assist.

New Haven scored the game's first two goals, but Parent would score twice in a 15-second span to tie the game 2-2 at the 21:22 left in the first half.  The Chargers scored with 14:52 and 11:47 left in the frame, but Mongeau would pull the Penmen within one with a goal in the top left corner with 9:17 to play.  The hosts scored the final three goals of the first half, including a Kenworthy goal with three seconds left to give New Haven a 7-3 lead at halftime.

The Chargers extended their lead to 10-3 with three goals in the first 3:44 of the second half.  Murphy would cut the UNH advantage to 10-5 with 24:36 left on a pair of goals 40 seconds apart.  The two teams would trade the next two goals, with Mallory Ferrandiz scoring with 21:55 left and Parent converting a free position shot with just under 16 minutes remaining.  Murphy would make it 11-7 with 12:34 to go, but the Chargers would effectively control possession the rest of the way and SNHU would get no closer.

New Haven goalie Maureen Spellman made nine saves in goal while SNHU netminder Katie Clark (Norwich, CT) turned aside six shots as the Penmen outshot the Chargers 22-19.

Murphy and Julie Kraus (Derry, NH) were named to the All-Tournament team for the Penmen.
