WEST HAVEN, Conn. - Top seed and
tournament host University of New Haven captured the 2009
Northeast-10 women's lacrosse championship with a 12-7 win over
third-seeded Southern New Hampshire University at DellaCamera
Stadium Sunday afternoon. The Chargers, who avenged their
only conference loss during the regular season, improved to 16-3
and will likely earn a berth to the NCAA Division II Women's
Lacrosse Championship when berths are announced Sunday night.
The Penmen, who were making their second-straight appearance in the
NE-10 title game, see their season come to a close at 13-5, with
the 13 wins a single-season school record.
Brigid Brady led New Haven with
four goals, while Briana Kenworthy scored three times and Ashley
Ferrandiz totaled two goals.
Libby Parent
(Hinesburg, VT) and Maura Murphy (Candia, NH) led
SNHU with three goals apiece, while Emily Mongeau
(Westborough, MA) added a goal and an assist.
New Haven scored the game's first
two goals, but Parent would score twice in a 15-second span to tie
the game 2-2 at the 21:22 left in the first half. The
Chargers scored with 14:52 and 11:47 left in the frame, but Mongeau
would pull the Penmen within one with a goal in the top left corner
with 9:17 to play. The hosts scored the final three goals of
the first half, including a Kenworthy goal with three seconds left
to give New Haven a 7-3 lead at halftime.
The Chargers extended their lead to
10-3 with three goals in the first 3:44 of the second half.
Murphy would cut the UNH advantage to 10-5 with 24:36 left on a
pair of goals 40 seconds apart. The two teams would trade the
next two goals, with Mallory Ferrandiz scoring with 21:55 left and
Parent converting a free position shot with just under 16 minutes
remaining. Murphy would make it 11-7 with 12:34 to go, but
the Chargers would effectively control possession the rest of the
way and SNHU would get no closer.
New Haven goalie Maureen Spellman
made nine saves in goal while SNHU netminder Katie
Clark (Norwich, CT) turned aside six shots as the Penmen
outshot the Chargers 22-19.
Murphy and Julie
Kraus (Derry, NH) were named to the All-Tournament team
for the Penmen.
