ESPN THE MAGAZINE ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA RELEASE
MANCHESTER, N.H. -
Julie Kraus (Derry, N.H.) and Libby
Parent (Hinesburg, Vt.), who each wrapped up stellar
four-year careers with the Southern New Hampshire University
women's lacrosse program, were each named to the prestigious ESPN
the Magazine Academic All-America Women's At-Large team for the
College Division on Thursday. Kraus, who garnered Second Team
honors in 2008, was named to the First Team, while Parent was a
Third Team selection. The ESPN the Magazine Academic
All-America teams are selected by members of the College Sports
Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Kraus becomes the first two-time
CoSIDA Academic All-American in SNHU history, and just the second
SNHU student-athlete to garner First Team accolades. Former
men's basketball standout Brian Larrabee was a First Team selection
in that sport in 2003. Parent becomes the seventh Southern
New Hampshire student-athlete named an Academic All-American,
joining Kraus, Larrabee, Judy Crawford (softball, 1986), Warren
Lewis (soccer (men's at-large), 1993), Nick Therrien (ice hockey
(men's at-large), 1998) and Lotta Thunberg (soccer (women's
at-large), 1998).
CoSIDA selects Academic All-America
teams in 12 programs, including the Women's At-Large program.
Student-athletes from 13 women's sports are eligible: bowling,
crew, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey,
lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis and water polo. The
College Division consists of NCAA Division II and III institutions
as well as NAIA institutions.
Kraus has been well-recognized for her achievements both on the
field and in the classroom. A three-time SNHU Female
Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Kraus, a Business Administration major
with a 3.99 grade-point average, was named the Intercollegiate
Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division II
Scholar-Athlete of the Year on Monday. A two-time ESPN the
Magazine Academic All-District First Team selection, Kraus is also
a two-time member of the Northeast-10 All-Academic Team.
On the field, Kraus, who served as
a tri-captain this season for the Penmen, garnered IWLCA/US
Lacrosse Second Team All-America honors for the second time in her
career this season. She also garnered womenslacrosse.com
All-America honors for the second time in her career in 2009, while
Kraus was named Northeast-10 All-Conference for the third time in
her career and to the First Team for the Second Time. She was
also the NE-10's Defensive Player of the Year in 2008. A
two-time IWLCA All-Region First Team selection, Kraus graduated
from SNHU as the program leader in ground balls, caused turnovers
and draw controls.
Parent, a Marketing major with a 3.95 GPA, is a two-time ESPN the
Magazine Academic All-District selection and is also a two-time
member of the Northeast-10 All-Academic Team. She was also
named to the IWLCA Academic Honor Roll along with Kraus last
season.
On the field, Parent graduated as
SNHU's all-time leader in goals and points and led the Penmen in
scoring as a junior and senior. A four-time Northeast-10
All-Conference selection who earned Second Team honors in 2009, she
was also a two-time IWLCA Second Team All-Region choice. This
season, she led Southern New Hampshire with 44 goals and 19 assists
for 63 points. As a junior in 2007-08, Parent was named
SNHU's Female Athlete of the Year.
Over their four seasons, Kraus and
Parent led the Penmen to a 43-20 record, including a 25-11 mark
over their junior and senior seasons. Southern New Hampshire
made four trips to the Northeast-10 Conference semifinals over
their four years, while it reached the NE-10 championship game in
both 2008 and
2009.
