PHILADELPHIA - The Southern New Hampshire
University women's tennis team fared well on day one of the
Wilson/ITA East Regional hosted by Chestnut Hill College and
Philadelphia University on Friday. The Penmen had two singles
players, Amber Chandronnait (Bow, N.H.) and
Lena Mukdaprakorn (Hartford, Conn.) advance to the
round of 16 in the A bracket. In addition, Mukdaprakorn and
Catalina Echeverry (Cali, Colombia) reached the
quarterfinal round of the A doubles draw.
Chandronnait, the defending
champion of the event and the top seed, earned a first-round bye
before topping Taylor Barber of Queens (N.Y.) College 6-0, 6-2 in
the second round. She is slated to face ninth-seeded Tamiris
Diversi of Dowling Saturday morning. Mukdaprakorn, a
freshman, also received a first-round bye, then defeated Jeana Frey
of Molloy College 6-3, 6-0. She will face eighth-seeded Maria
Mendes of Queens on Saturday. Mendes was defeated by
Chandronnait in the singles final last year.
Echeverry fell in her first match
in the bracket, falling to the tournament's second seed 6-1, 6-1.
In doubles play, Echeverry and
Mukdaprakorn opened with an 8-5 win over Morganne Downing and Katie
Francazio of Division I Bryant. They then upended Barber and
Daniela Celi of Queens 8-3, and are slated to face the
second-seeded doubles team from Concordia on Saturday.
Echeverry and Kara Pease (Falmouth, Mass.) fell in
their first match to another duo from Concordia 8-6.
In the B singles bracket, the
Penmen had three players advance to the second round, as
Alison Waring (Westborough, Mass.) defeated Laura
Beaver of Philadelphia when she retired due to injury.
Jennifer Zastrow (Rutland, Mass.) was a 8-3 winner
over Elizabeth Rhode of Le Moyne, while Samantha
Jean (Bedford, N.H.) was a 8-1 victor over Philadelphia's
Sarah Harris. Meaghan Houghton (Manchester,
N.H.) fell in the first round 8-4.
In B doubles action, Waring and
Jean advanced to the round of 16 with an 8-1 win over Daniela
Pereira and Anastasia Chibrikova of Goldey-Beacom.
