MANCHESTER, N.H. - Sixth-ranked Southern New
Hampshire University got goals from three different players as it
defeated Merrimack College 3-1 in Northeast-10 men's soccer
Wednesday night. The Penmen extended their unbeaten streak to
nine games (8-0-1) and are now 9-1-1 overall and 6-0-1 in the
Northeast-10. The Warriors now sit 4-4-1 overall and 2-2 in
the league.
Southern New Hampshire took a 1-0
lead 1:08 before intermission. On a restart, Michael
Adam (Ludlow, Mass.) delivered a long free kick into the
box which was headed home by Chris Tsonis
(Dartmouth, Mass.) The Penmen made it 2-0 14 minutes into the
second half when Christian Rodriguez (Manchester,
N.H.) delivered a left-to-right crossing pass into the box which
Adrian Schippers (Ashby, Mass.) headed over the
arms of Merrimack keeper Kevin Joyce. SNHU took a 3-0 lead in
the 65th minute when Ethan Lapierre
(Manchester, N.H.) delivered a line drive from 15 yards out that
snuck inside the near left post.
SNHU's shutout bid was stopped at
the 69:20 mark when Olof Lindhe scored after he took a pass from
Nelson Santos and got past the Penmen defense.
SNHU, which had posted seven
straight shutouts coming into the game, allowed its first goal
since September 3, a span of 787:35 of game action. The
Penmen fell one shutout shy of the school record of eight straight
set in 2000.
Southern New Hampshire keeper
Sean Lambert (Rehoboth, Mass.) saw his personal
shutout streak snapped at 719:46. He made three saves in the
win, while Joyce turned aside four shots. Merrimack generated
a 14-11 shot advantage on the evening.
Southern New Hampshire returns to
action Saturday when it travels to Assumption College for a 1:00
contest. The Greyhounds are ranked No. 5 in the latest
adidas/NSCAA East Region poll, while the Penmen are first.
