MANCHESTER, N.H. – No. 12 Southern New Hampshire University used a pair of goals 2:07 apart late in the second half to down Saint Michael's College 2-0 in Northeast-10 men's soccer Wednesday night at Larkin Field. The Penmen, who have shutout eight of their last nine opponents, improved to 9-1-1 overall and 5-1-1 in NE-10 play, while the Purple Knights are now winless in their last five contests and stand 5-4-2 and 2-3-2 in the league.
SNHU got on the board just past the game's 73-minute mark. Christian Rodriguez (Manchester, N.H.) played a ball up to Chris Tsonis (Dartmouth, Mass.) who made a run. Tsonis got past a Saint Michael's defender and beat SMC keeper Logan Kingman, who had come out to play the ball, low.
Rodriguez and Tsonis hooked up again for another score at the 75:09 mark. Tsonis was playing the ball on the right wing and played it into Rodriguez, who took a touch and fired a soft shot past Kingman from 10 yards out.
SNHU keeper Joey Kapinos (Ludlow, Mass.) made four saves en route to his third shutout of the season. Kingman turned aside four shots for Saint Michael's, which was outshot 21-8. The Penmen also generated a 12-4 edge in corner kicks.
Southern New Hampshire is idle until Tuesday, October 12, when it travels to crosstown rival Saint Anselm College.
