SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Fourth-seeded Le Moyne College advanced to the semifinals of the Northeast-10 Conference Men's Soccer Tournament after defeating No. 5 Southern New Hampshire University 4-1 in a penalty kick shootout after the two teams played to a scoreless double-overtime draw. The Dolphins, who advance to Friday's semifinals where they will face either top-seeded Franklin Pierce or No. 8 seed Merrimack, are now 9-5-4, while the Penmen now stand 11-3-4 overall. Tuesday's game is officially recorded as a tie in the standings.
SNHU must now await word of a possible NCAA Tournament berth. The Division II tourney field will be announced Monday, November 8 at 7:00 pm, and the Penmen will be looking to make their third consecutive appearance.
Le Moyne, shooting first, took a 1-0 lead in the shootout when Eddy Rosenburgh converted his penalty kick. The Penmen answered as Paul D'Angelo (Gloucester, Mass.) made his attempt. Jesse Carr gave the Dolphins a 2-1 lead with his successful attempt, then Le Moyne keeper Matt Silva stopped an attempt by Christian Rodriguez (Manchester, N.H.) to maintain the 2-1 advantage.
The hosts made it 3-1 when Zach Kuzemka converted his penalty kick and Silva came up with another save, this time on an attempt by Jayme Kapinos (Ludlow, Mass.). Le Moyne clinched the shootout win when Bryce Martin made it 4-1 to open the fourth round.
Silva and SNHU keeper Joey Kapinos (Ludlow, Mass.) each made three saves to earn shutouts as both teams attempted 15 shots and each generated eight corner kicks.
