MANCHESTER, NH – The
Southern New Hampshire University baseball team fell to the
Skyhawks of Stonehill College by a score of 3-1 in the home opener
at Penmen Field. Stonehill improved to 3-5 and 1-0 in the
Northeast-10, while the Penmen are 3-4 and 0-1 in the league.
Stonehill jumped out to the early 2-0 lead in the top of the
first inning as first baseman Angelo Bruno drove a home run to
straight-away center field to score Scott Hackett, who reached on a
single.
The Penmen answered quickly, as Robert Wronski
(Arlington, Mass.) stroked an RBI double into the gap that scored
Eric Pelletier (Beverly, Mass.) to halve the
Skyhawks advantage.
The Skyhawks added an insurance run in the top of the sixth
inning as Rich McHugh lined an RBI single to left field, plating
Shane Franz who reached on a hit-by-pitch.
Brad Monroe (Hampton Falls, N.H.) pitched the
first six innings for the Penmen, allowing only two earned runs on
five hits, one walk, and eight strikeouts. Derrick
Sylvester (Franklin, N.H.) made his first appearance in
relief on the season for Southern New Hampshire, striking out four
in two innings. Bryant Gauthier (Lynn,
Mass.) pitched the top of the ninth inning, retiring all three
batters, two via the strikeout.
Alex McCormick pitched seven innings for Stonehill, allowing
only one earned run on six hits while registering five strikeouts.
Joe SantaBarbara and Brendan Shepard pitched two hitless innings to
relieve the starting pitcher.
The Penmen kick off their Florida swing Friday when they face
Saint Michael's in Lantana, Florida for a 12:30 game.
