FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.
– Host Nova Southeastern University edged Southern
New Hampshire University 5-4 in baseball Monday night at the NSU
Baseball Complex. The Sharks improve to 15-14 overall, while
the Penmen are now 5-7 on the season.
Southern New Hampshire jumped out
to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning. After
Brandon Dutch (Monroe, Conn.) reached on a one-out
single, Shark pitching issued four straight walks, with
Kevin Spatkowski (Bristol, Conn.) and
Scott Rogers (Orr's Island, Maine) working
bases-loaded walks. The third Penmen run would score with
Matt Boulter (Wrentham, Mass.) scored on a wild
pitch.
Nova Southeastern would score twice
in the bottom of the second, then added single runs in the third
and fifth to take a 4-3 lead. Southern New Hampshire would
tie the game in the top of the sixth when Boulter worked a two-out
walked and scored on a single by Rogers. NSU scored the
game-winner in the bottom of the seventh when Nikko Echevarria
singled to lead off the frame and scored on a double by Rhys
Roberts.
SNHU would load the bases with two
outs in the top of the ninth, but the hosts struck out the final
Penmen batter to end the threat.
Rogers led the Penmen by going 1-3
with a walk and two runs driven in. SNHU was outhit 12-5 but
worked six walks. Southern New Hampshire starter Brad
Monroe (Hampton Falls, N.H.) went seven innings and
allowed 12 hits and five runs while fanning five. Derek
Anderson (Dracut, Mass.) hurled two perfect innings of relief with
one strikeout.
Southern New Hampshire returns to
action Tuesday when it heads to Barry University for a 4:00
twinbill.
