BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. - Southern New Hampshire
University split a baseball doubleheader with Dowling College on
Sunday afternoon. The Golden Lions registered a 2-1 win in
the opener, while the Penmen rallied for a 3-2 win in the
nightcap. Both teams are now 2-2 on the season. Dowling
is the defending East Region champion and is ranked No. 28 among
Division II schools.
Trailing 1-0 entering the top of
the eighth, pinch-hitter Jon Minucci (Madison,
Conn.) led off the inning with an infield single, and moved to
second after SNHU's No. 9 hitter, Kevin Spatkowski
(Bristol, Conn.) worked a walk. After an out, the Penmen
loaded the bases when Eric Pelletier (Beverly,
Mass.) was hit by a pitch. Following another out,
Bobby Wronski (Arlington, Mass.) delivered a
two-run double down the left field line to score Minucci and
Spatkowski.
The Penmen would add an insurance
run in the top of the ninth when Minucci reached with two outs when
he was hit by a pitch and scored on a single by Spatkowski.
Dowling would plate a run in the bottom of the ninth and had a
runner in scoring position with one out, but SNHU starter
Bryant Gauthier (Lynn, Mass.) induced a pair of
groundouts to preserve the win.
Gauthier scattered six hits in his
complete-game effort, fanning seven while walking just two and
allowing one earned run. Dowling starter Nicholas Albero
allowed just four hits and struck out eight without a walk in seven
innings of work. Andrew Valera took the loss for the Golden
Lions, allowing a pair of runs in the eighth, his lone inning of
work.
Pelletier led Southern New
Hampshire with a pair of hits, while Frank Intagliata had two of
Dowling's six hits.
In the opener, SNHU staked itself
to a 1-0 lead in the third when Spatkowski and scored on a
groundout by Pelletier. Dowling tied the game in the bottom
of the frame when Intagliata reached on a one-out single and
scored on a groundout by Colin Barnathan. The Golden Lions
recorded a walkoff win in the bottom of the seventh of the
seven-inning contest when Daniel Pembroke's single plated Brian
Ferguson.
Buddy Cipoletti worked two innings
of hitless relief, fanning five, to pick up the win for
Dowling. Freshman Derrick Sylvester
(Franklin, N.H.) went the distance for SNHU and allowed four hits
in 6.2 innings of work, striking out five but walking six.
Intagliata had two of Dowling's four hits in the opener.
Southern New Hampshire is back in
action next weekend when it travels to C.W. Post for a pair of
doubleheaders next Saturday and Sunday.
