WEST HAVEN, Conn.
- The Southern New Hampshire University baseball team dropped two
games Saturday afternoon against New Haven by scores of 10-1 and
8-3 in a Northeast-10 conference doubleheader. The Penmen are now
11-16 overall and 4-6 in the NE-10, while the Chargers improved to
21-7 and 9-5 in the conference.
In the opener, the Chargers broke
up a scoreless game with three runs in the third. Joe Romanelli and
David Wirkus both walked to begin the frame and Ryan Brockett's
single loaded the bases with one out. An error by Penmen starter
Steve Golbranson (Abington, Mass.) allowed
Romanelli and Wirkus to score. Tom Ballardo then singled home
Brockett to make it 3-0.
Up four, the Chargers would tack on
another four runs in the fifth after back-to-back walks to Brockett
and Cory Carr to open the inning. After an error allowed Ballardo
to reach, a wild pitch allowed the runners to move up a base as
Brockett came in the back door. Jordan Kershaw then tripled to
plate two more, and then scored himself on error. Kyle Pettronuto
doubled, which spelled the end of Golbranson's day after 3.2
innings.
The Chargers scored again in the
sixth and in the eighth, and the Penmen scored their run in the
seventh after Patrick Copp (Cumberland, Maine)
plated Brandon Dutch (Monroe, Conn.) on a bases
loaded walk. Dutch finished with three hits in the opener.
New Haven's Chris Smith scattered
five hits over seven innings while striking out six.
In the second game, New Haven got
on the board in the first after Shane O'Connell's sacrifice fly
knocked in Brockett following his triple. Southern New Hampshire
evened things up with a run in the fourth after Tim Rines' (Merrimack, N.H.) RBI groundout scored
Thomas Quicker (West Islip, N.Y.).
The Chargers took control in the
fifth, scoring five times on four hits and three errors. Kershaw
led off with a single and advanced to second on a fielder's choice
and an error. Kyle Donnelly reached on an error, allowing Kershaw
to score. Rombilius and Brockett followed with RBI base knocks
before Pettoruto reached on an error to plate another run. New
Haven tacked on two more runs in the seventh.
In the ninth, the Penmen loaded the
bases on a Jon Minucci (Madison, Conn.) walk and
singles by Jeff Giannino (Beverly, Mass.) and
Matt Boulter (Wrentham, Mass). Copp worked a bases
loaded walk and Scott Rogers (Orr's Island, Maine)
plated another run with an RBI groundout.
Bryant Gauthier
(Lynn, Mass.) took the loss on the hill for the Penmen,
surrendering seven hits and five earned runs in five innings of
work. Quicker had two hits to lead the Penmen in the
nightcap, while Eric Pelletier (Beverly, Mass.)
extended his hit streak to seven games with a fourth-inning
single.
Southern New Hampshire returns to
action tomorrow afternoon when the Penmen travel to American
International for a noon doubleheader.
