MANCHESTER, N.H. – Sara Halbich (Salem, N.H.)
totaled four goals and scored what turned out to be the
game-winning goal with 10:53 remaining as Southern New Hampshire
University edged the University of New Haven 10-9 in Northeast-10
women's lacrosse Saturday afternoon at Kayo Field. The
Penmen, who won their second straight, are now 5-4 and 4-1 in the
NE-10, while the Chargers are 5-5 and 4-2 in the league.
Saturday's game was a rematch
of the 2009 Northeast-10 championship game, won by New Haven by a
12-7 score.
Sherry Darrell
(Bow, N.H.) also added three goals for the Penmen.
Jami Shugrue (Lowell, Mass.), Kaley Waterman (Berwick, Maine) and Emily Mongeau (Westboro, Mass.) each added single goals for
Southern New Hampshire.
Natalie Lieberman led New Haven
with four goals, while Sarah Magnone scored twice for the
Chargers.
Southern New Hampshire trailed 7-4
at halftime, but scored the first three goals of the second half
and a Halbich goal with 15:10 remaining made it 7-7. Aubrey
Duncan would respond for New Haven 45 seconds later, but the Penmen
would tie the game with 12:44 left on a Darrell tally.
The Penmen took their first lead of
the game, 9-8, with 11:57 left on Halbich's goal, but the
Chargers would tie the game 24 seconds later on a Lieberman
goal. Halbich would close out the scoring with 10:53 left as
her goal made it 10-9.
New Haven stormed out to a 4-0 lead
14:39 into the game following a goal by Lieberman. Waterman
would get the Penmen on the board with her goal 14:06 before
halftime, and the guests would pull within one, 4-3, on
Shugrue's free-position tally with 7:10 left. New Haven
would take a 7-4 lead five seconds before halftime on a Lieberman
goal.
Hannah Moriarty
(Chelmsford, Mass.) made 11 saves for Southern New Hampshire, while
New Haven goalie Maureen Spellman turned aside 16 shots as the
Penmen outshot the Chargers 34-29.
Southern New Hampshire returns to
action Wednesday night when it travels to Assumption College for a
7:00 contest.
