SPRINGFIELD, Mass.
- The Southern New Hampshire University baseball team, playing its
second road doubleheader in two days, won two games by the scores
of 4-3 and 7-4 over American International College on Sunday
afternoon in a Northeast-10 conference twinbill. The Penmen broke a
3-3 tie in the eighth inning of game one, and plated three runs in
the tenth inning of game two for the sweep. The Penmen improved to
13-16 on the year and 6-6 in the NE-10, while the Yellow Jackets
fell to 6-20 overall and 3-13 in the conference.
In the opener, Jeff Giannino's (Beverly, Mass.) solo home run in the eighth
inning proved to be the eventual winning run, and Garrett Jewell (Alexandria, N.H.) came on thereafter to toss two
hitless innings for his second save of the year. Jewell relieved
starter Brad Monroe (Hampton Falls, N.H.), who
allowed just three earned runs over seven innings for his first
win.
The Penmen got on the board early
on after Brendan O'Brien (East Bridgewater, Mass.)
led off the game with a double. He proceeded to steal third and
then scored on a balk by John Hanna, staking Southern New Hampshire
to an early 1-0 lead.
In the fifth, Eric Pelletier (Beverly, Mass.) led off with a single and would
eventually score on a Tim Rines' (Merrimack, N.H.)
RBI single. After being hit by a pitch, Brandon Dutch (Monroe, Conn.) would come around to score as well
after Giannino's RBI sacrifice extended the Penmen lead to 3-0.
In the bottom half, the Yellow
Jackets would tie it up with three runs of their own. Sean
McClelland tripled down the right field line with one out, and
would score after Mike Tranghese singled up the middle. Dillon
Fontaine followed with a single of his own, and Dan Bassani's
ground rule double plated Tranghese. Anthony Arichiello then
grounded out to short as Fontaine came in the back door to tie
it.
O'Brien and Pelletier both had two
hits apiece for the Penmen.
In the second game, the Yellow
Jackets owned a 4-2 lead heading into the eighth. Matt Boulter (Wrentham, Mass.) and Dutch opened the inning with
consecutive singles for Southern New Hampshire, and Rines
sacrificed advancing the runners to second and third. After
Giannino had an RBI groundout to plate Boulter, Dutch stole home to
tie it up.
The Penmen would add three more in
the tenth after Pelletier was hit by a pitch and Boulter worked a
walk to begin the inning. Dutch and Rines followed with
back-to-back RBI singles, and Dutch would later score on an
error.
Dutch had two hits, scored twice,
and knocked in a run, while Rines had two runs batted in.
Freshman Jon Massad (Shrewsbury, Mass.) came on in relief in the
seventh inning to get out of a jam, and tossed 3.2 hitless innings
for his first collegiate victory. Penmen starter Derrick Sylvester (Franklin, N.H.) allowed three runs in 5.2 IP
while striking out five Yellow Jackets.
Southern New Hampshire returns to
action on Tuesday when it hosts Merrimack College at Penmen Field
for a 3:30 contest.
