MANCHESTER, N.H. – Sherry Darrell
(Bow, N.H.) totaled eight goals and five assists to lead Southern
New Hampshire University to a 23-13 Northeast-10 women's lacrosse
victory over Southern Connecticut State University at Larkin Field
Saturday. The Penmen improved to 7-4 and 6-1 in the NE-10,
while the Owls remain searching for their first win as they are now
0-10 and 0-8 in the league.
With her 13 points, Darrell tied
her own school record for points in a game, set earlier this season
when she totaled nine goals and four assists against Converse
College.
Darrell also set two single-season
school records Saturday. With 53 goals and 78 points on the
season, she broke the previous single-season mark in both
categories. Current teammate Carole
Lee (Derry, N.H.) scored 52 goals in 2008, while Libby
Parent totaled 76 points that same season.
Emily Mongeau
(Westboro, Mass.) totaled six goals and an assist for the Penmen,
while Lee finished with three goals and an
assist. Sara
Halbich (Salem, N.H.) scored three times, while
Jami
Shugrue (Lowell, Mass.) added a goal and an
assist. Jade Antonangeli
(Bourne, Mass.) and Karyn Sampson
(Kingston, Mass.) each added single goals.
Five players finished with two
goals apiece for Southern Connecticut, with KellyAnne McCafferty,
Elaina Heiple and Elizabeth Dishian pacing the Owls with two goals
and an assist apiece.
The Penmen never trailed and the
game was tied just once, when McCafferty scored 2:47 into the game
to make it 1-1. The Owls trailed 9-5 with 7:02 to go in the
first half following a free position shot by Dishian before the
Penmen scored nine of the final 10 goals of the first half, and a
tally by Darrell six seconds before intermission made it 18-6 at
halftime.
SNHU took its largest lead, 22-7,
with 16:37 left on a goal by Shugrue before the Owls closed out the
game by scoring six of the final seven goals.
Hannah Moriarty
(Chelmsford, Mass.) made five saves for the Penmen, while SCSU
goalie Lisa Corso made 10 stops as SNHU outshot the Owls 43-22,
including 32-10 in the first half.
Southern New Hampshire returns to
action Tuesday afternoon when it hosts Saint Michael's College in a
4:00 contest.
