MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Southern New Hampshire
University baseball team swept a non-conference doubleheader from
Saint Michael's College by scores of 13-4 and 8-2 Friday
afternoon at Penmen Field. The Penmen, who have now won four
in a row, improve to 9-13, while the Purple Knights are 1-12 on the
season.
In the opener, SNHU staked itself
to a 3-0 lead in the first when Eric Pelletier
(Beverly, Mass.) hit a three-run home run down the left field
line. The Penmen would then score eight times in the second
to take an 11-0 lead. In that frame, Southern New Hampshire
pounded out six hits, including a two-run single by Brendan
O'Brien (East Bridgewater, Mass.) and a two-run
triple by Bobby Wronski (Arlington, Mass.), and
also took advantage of two walks, an error, and a hit by pitch.
The Penmen would add single runs in
the third when a single by Brandon Dutch (Monroe,
Conn.) singled to score Thomas Quicker (West
Islip, N.Y.) and in the fourth when Jon Minucci
(Madison, Conn.) belted a solo home run to center.
Eight of the nine Penmen starters
had at least one hit as SNHU outhit Saint Michael's
13-3. Pelletier, Dutch and Scott Rogers
(Orr's Island, Maine) each finished with a pair of
hits. Freshman starter John Pickowicz (Hill,
N.H.) earned the win, allowing just one hit in six innings of work
and fanning nine and surrendering just one run.
In the nightcap, the Penmen once
again opened with a three-run first frame. A Pelletier single
plated O'Brien and Quicker, while Pelletier would score on an
RBI single by Wronski to center.
SNHU extended its lead to 7-0 by
scoring twice in the third and two more times in the fourth.
In the third, a single by Tim Rines (Merrimack,
N.H.) plated Quicker, while Nick Leva (Cambridge,
Mass.) worked a bases-loaded walk to score Wronski. Wronski
would belt a two-run home run to left in the fourth that also
scored Quicker, who had reached on a one-out single.
Saint Michael's would score
their only two runs in the eighth when a single by Matt Beaulieu
plated Tyler Hotte and Bryan Geary. The Penmen would score in
the bottom of the frame when Rogers worked a leadoff walk and
scored on a sac fly by Quicker.
Freshman Taylor
Eames (Epsom, N.H.) earned the win on the hill for the
Penmen, scattering four hits in eight innings of work while racking
up 10 strikeouts. Quicker and Wronski finished with three
hits apiece as SNHU outhit Saint Michael's 14-4.
Wronski also knocked in three runs.
Southern New Hampshire returns to
action Saturday when it hosts Pace University in a noon
Northeast-10 doubleheader.
