MANCHESTER, N.H. – Southern New Hampshire
University edged Saint Anselm College 2-1 in a Northeast-10
baseball contest Thursday afternoon at Sullivan Park. The
Penmen, who fell to the Hawks 3-0 on Tuesday, improved to 15-20-1
and 8-10-1 in the NE-10, while the hosts are now 10-24 and 8-12 in
the league.
Southern New Hampshire broke open a
scoreless game by manufacturing a run in the fourth.
Tim
Rines (Merrimack, N.H.) and Thomas Quicker (West
Islip, N.Y.) opened the inning with back-to-back singles, then both
moved into scoring position on a sac bunt by Eric Pelletier
(Beverly, Mass.). Brandon Dutch (Monroe,
Conn.) then delivered a sac fly to left to plate Rines.
Matt Boulter (Wrentham,
Mass.) made it 2-0 in the seventh with two outs when he parked a
1-0 pitch from David Giarrusso over the fence in right, his second
home run of the season .
The Hawks would get on the board
with a run in the eighth. Robert Kelly hit a sharp grounder
just inside the third base bag that went for a double with one
out. After another out, SNHU hurler Derrick Sylvester
(Franklin, N.H.) hit Matt Stone, who was pinch run for by Eric
Baca. James Garrigan then singled to shallow center, but Baca
would be gunned down at third by SNHU center fielder Brendan O'Brien
(East Bridgewater, Mass.). The umpires initially
ruled Kelly did not cross home before the out, but later reversed
the call to make it 2-1.
In the bottom of the ninth, Mike
Garczynski doubled to lead off the inning, then advanced to third
on a sac bunt by Josh Lafond. The next batter, Steve Panza,
sent a dribbler down the first base line that Pelletier, playing
first, charged and threw out Garczynski at home, with SNHU catcher
Kevin
Spatkowski (Bristol, Conn.) holding onto the ball
after a collision at the plate.
The Hawks would get a runner into
scoring position when Richie Manzi reached on an error, moving
Panza to second. Sylvester would end the game by getting TJ
Murphy to swing at a high 1-2 fastball for his fifth strikeout.
Sylvester allowed 10 hits but
walked just one in his complete-game victory, his second complete
game of the season. Giarrusso allowed just four hits for
Saint Anselm and fanned two. Garrigan led the Hawks with
three hits while Kelly, Stone and Panza had two hits apiece.
Southern New Hampshire returns to
action Saturday when it travels to Adelphi University for a noon
doubleheader.
