GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Host Adelphi University took
both ends of a Northeast-10 baseball doubleheader with Southern New
Hampshire University by scores of 8-1 and 3-1 Saturday
afternoon. The Panthers improve to 29-12 and 15-7 in the
NE-10, while the Penmen are 15-22-1 and 8-12-1 in the league.
In the opener, Adelphi scored three
runs in the third and fourth and added single tallies in the fifth
and sixth to take an 8-0 lead. In the third the Panthers got
three unearned runs after Trevor Thorstensen, while in the fourth,
the hosts got an RBI double from Lucas Romeo and an RBI triple from
Richard McCarren.
The Penmen would plate their only
run in the top of the ninth when pinch hitter Jeff Giannino (Beverly, Mass.) doubled to lead off the inning
and came home when Thomas Quicker (West Islip,
N.Y.) hit into a double play.
Chris Weidlein led Adelphi with
three hits as the Panthers outhit SNHU 11-7. AU starter Keith
Couch allowed six hits in 7.2 innings of work while fanning
10. Bryant Gauthier (Lynn, Mass.) took the
loss for the Penmen, allowing nine hits and seven runs (four
earned) in five innings while fanning five.
In the nightcap, Adelphi took a 1-0
lead in the bottom of the first when Justin Ciamillo homered.
The Panthers would make it 2-0 in the fourth when Justin Farnum
doubled to open the frame and scored when Craig Matteo grounded
into a double play.
The Penmen would halve the lead in
the top of the fifth. Kevin Spatkowski
(Bristol, Conn.) led off with a single, and after moving to second
on a sacrifice bunt by Jon Massad (Shrewsbury,
Mass.), scored on a double by Jon Minucci
(Madison, Conn.). Adelphi would make it 3-1 in the seventh
when leadoff batter Lucas Romeo reached on an error, and pinch
runner Matt Barle, running for Romeo, scored on a sac fly by
Anthony Anzalone.
Matt Boulter
(Wrentham, Mass.) and Spatkowski opened the ninth with back-to-back
singles for Southern New Hampshire, knocking Adelphi starter Robert
Nixon out of the game. Massad would reach on a bunt single
off Panther reliever Dillon McNamara to load the bases, but
McNamara would fan the next three hitters as the Penmen left the
bases full.
Nixon fanned five and allowed eight
hits in his eight innings of work, while McNamara earned his second
save of the season. Brad Monroe (Hampton
Falls, N.H.) went the distance on the hill for SNHU, allowing nine
hits and three runs while striking out seven.
Spatkowski was 3-4 to lead SNHU in
the nightcap as both teams finished with nine hits. Richard
McCarren had three hits for Adelphi.
