– The Southern New Hampshire University women's
tennis team has earned the No. 3 seed in the East Regional of the
2010 NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championship and will face
sixth-seeded Adelphi University in a first round match next Friday
(May 7) at Queens College in Flushing, N.Y. Match times will
be announced Thursday.
Southern New Hampshire enters the
NCAA Tournament 19-1 overall and on an 18-match winning streak,
with its only loss coming to Division I Dartmouth College.
The Penmen captured the Northeast-10 regular season title with a
perfect 13-0 mark, then went on to capture the NE-10 Tournament
title with a 5-2 win over Stonehill College on Sunday. It
marked the first time SNHU had won either the NE-10 regular season
or tournament title.
SNHU was a perfect 18-0 against
Division II competition this season, including a 17-0 mark against
East Region foes and a 6-0 record against teams qualifying for the
NCAA Tournament. The Penmen are making their second NCAA
appearance, as they advanced to the second round last season.
Adelphi enters the tournament with
a 15-3 overall record. SNHU handed the Panthers their first
loss of the season, an 8-1 decision on March 28, while AU's other
two losses came to Stonehill in the regular season and in the
Northeast-10 semifinals.
Should SNHU advance, it would face
the winner of second-seeded and host Queens (19-3) and
seventh-seeded Saint Michael's College (12-8). The Penmen
defeated the Purple Knights twice, including a 5-0 win in the
Northeast-10 semifinals, while it did not face Queens.
In the other half of the East
Region bracket, to be hosted by fourth-seeded Stonehill College,
top-seeded Concordia (N.Y.) College (13-1) will square off with No.
8 seed Holy Family University (13-7), while the host Skyhawks
(17-3) will face No. 5 seed Goldey Beacom College (13-4) Thursday.
The winners of each sub-regional
will advance to the 16-team Division II finals held May 12-15 at
Sanlando Park at Altamonte Springs, Fla.
