WALTHAM, Mass. – Freshman Thomas Quicker (West Islip, N.Y.) went 3-5 and knocked in a pair
of runs as Southern New Hampshire University posted a 6-2
Northeast-10 baseball win over Bentley University at DeFelice Field
Friday. The Penmen, who completed a two-game season sweep of
the Falcons, are now 17-22-1 overall and 10-12-1 in the NE-10,
while Bentley is 20-23 and 12-12 in the league.
With the win, the Penmen remain in
the hunt for the sixth and final playoff spot in the upcoming
Northeast-10 Tournament. Southern New Hampshire has three
league games remaining, a doubleheader against league-leading
Southern Connecticut at home Saturday and a single game against
Merrimack on the road Sunday.
SNHU grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top
of the first. Tim Rines (Merrimack, N.H.)
worked a one-out walk and eventually scored on a wild pitch.
Quicker followed with a single to second and scored on a triple by
Matt Boulter (Wrentham, Mass.).
Bentley tied the game with single
runs in the fourth and fifth. In the fourth, James Roche
singled to lead off the inning and scored on a single by Lamarre
Rey. In the fifth, a Mark Lane single plated Chris Hardy.
The Penmen built a 6-2 lead by
scoring single runs in four straight innings starting with the
sixth. In the sixth, Eric Pelletier
(Beverly, Mass.) worked a one-out walk and scored on a single by
Kevin Spatkowski (Bristol, Conn.). Rines
would make it 4-2 in the seventh when he scored on a Quicker
single.
Pelletier opened the eighth with a
single and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by
Spatkowski. In the ninth, the Penmen added an insurance run
with two outs when a Quicker single down the left field line plated
Brendan O'Brien (East Bridgewater, Mass.),
who reached on a one-out walk.
Bentley would score three times in
the bottom of the ninth and get the winning run to the plate.
Rey led off the inning with a home run, and after Vinnie Eruzione
struck out swinging, Charlie Pagliarulo was hit by a pitch.
Ross Curley then doubled to give the Falcons two runners in scoring
position, and Hardy would single to make it a 6-5 game. SNHU
reliever Garrett Jewell (Alexandria, N.H.) then
got Vinnie Damato to fly out and Lane to pop out to end the
game.
Boulter had two hits for the Penmen
as they outhit Bentley 10-8. Hardy and Rey each finished with
a pair of hits and two RBI for the Falcons. SNHU starter
Derrick Sylvester (Franklin, N.H.) went seven
innings and allowed five hits while fanning three to improve to
3-3. Jewell earned the save by working the final two
innings.
Dan Murphy fanned nine in eight
innings of work and took the loss for Bentley, surrendering nine
hits and walking four.
