GARDEN CITY, N.Y.
– Top-seeded Adelphi University jumped out to a 16-4 halftime
lead and posted a 24-6 win over No. 5 seed Southern New Hampshire
University in the semifinals of the Northeast-10 Women's Lacrosse
Championship Saturday afternoon at Competition Field. The
Panthers, who are ranked No. 2 nationally, improved to 15-1 and
will face the winner of Saturday's second semifinal between No. 2
Stonehill and third-seeded Merrimack. The Penmen, who were
making their fifth straight NE-10 semifinal appearance, see their
season come to a close at 9-8.
Claire Petersen led Adelphi with
six goals and four assists while Kaitlyn Carter totaled four goals
and three assists. Erica Devito and Danielle Kafarski each
totaled three goals and an assist, while Demmianne Cook added three
goals. The Panthers got goals from 10 different players on
the afternoon.
Sara Halbich (Salem,
N.H.) led SNHU with two goals and two assists while Jade
Antonangeli (Bourne, Mass.) added two goals.
Emily
Mongeau (Westboro, Mass.) and Maura Murphy (Candia,
N.H.) each had single tallies for Southern New Hampshire.
Southern New Hampshire took a 4-3
lead just under nine minutes in on a goal by Mongeau, but the
Panthers would close out the first half by scoring 13 unanswered
goals to take a 16-4 halftime lead. The Panthers would score
the first four goals of the second half before Murphy broke SNHU's
scoring drought with a tally with just over 18 minutes to play.
Adelphi goalie Caitlin Fitzpatrick
made six saves in the first 42:16 before Cathryn Bonitz made three
saves the rest of the way. SNHU netminder Hannah Moriarty
(Chelmsford, Mass.) made 13 stops as the Panthers outshot the
Penmen 44-23.
