BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. – Jon Brockway (Lebanon, N.H.) scored his first collegiate goal as the No. 4 ranked Southern New Hampshire University men's soccer team defeated No. 10 ranked Dowling College by a 2-0 score on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Penmen improve to 7-0-1 overall while the Golden Lions slide to 4-1-2 overall, suffering their first defeat of the season and snapping an 11-game unbeaten streak that stretched back to last season.
With the shutout, the Penmen have not allowed a goal in their last 638:32 of play, dating back to September 4 against C.W. Post. Southern New Hampshire has posted six straight shutouts and is unbeaten in 11 straight games dating back to last season.
Brockway scored 4:15 into the contest, giving the Penmen the early 1-0 advantage. Brockway received a cross from Michael Adam (Ludlow, Mass.), which was headed past Golden Lions netminder Chris Kucera. The goal was Brockway's first collegiate marker.
Christian Rodriguez (Manchester, N.H.) scored his second goal of the season with exactly twelve minutes remaining in regulation. Rodriguez beat the Dowling goaltender to the left corner off of a free kick, adding an insurance goal late in the tilt.
Southern New Hampshire goaltender Jon Mayo (Merrimack, N.H.) made four saves in net en route to his third shutout of the season. Chris Kucera made one save as the Golden Lions outshot the Penmen 15-11.
The Penmen face their second-straight ranked opponent Wednesday, traveling to No. 16 Merrimack College for a 7:00 contest. Southern New Hampshire returns home on Saturday as they face off against conference-rival Assumption College at 7:00 p.m. at Larkin Field.
